[CHW] Microsoft readies its future DirectX 12 graphics API - Page 6

It honestly amazes me, how many people are posting about things they have 0 clue about in here. Like...I don't understand, is it really that hard to research before you post something?

I mean, I don't claim to know a lot about mantle or dx12, but at least I actually truly read, and do my research beyond the marketing crap that goes around, to try and learn how things work.

This is a tech forum, we don't need people posting about things they think they know from reading 1 marketing slide, or a quote from the OP because they never bothered to even click the article.
/Rant

As for DX12, it would only make sense to release a new better API. Which is good for the consumer in the end! smile.gif

How far away is DX12?

Can it possibly be any sooner than 18-24 months?

As it stands right now, AMD has Hawaii and Crystal [mobile] and Nvidia has Maxwell. Then at the end of this year or beginning of next there is a die shrink. DX12 hasn't been on been on anyone's radar as far as we know, so shouldn't DX12 hardware be pretty far off?

That is simply not true. The PC has way more games being released for it than consoles. Almost double in 2013.

Sure if you count all the inde games and such that could be run on playstation 2 hardware.

When it comes to actual AAA games...nearly all of them are console ports. There are very few PC exclusives of any real caliber outside of MMOs and RTS games and those genres are rather limited. I don't think I can even think of PC exclusive made in the last three years by a major publisher that isn't one.

Game selection is about the only thing console gaming has as a plus in my book.

Arma 3
DayZ
Torchlight 2
Counter Strike GO
Red Orchestra 2
Rising Storm
DOTA 2
Natural Selection 2
Chivalry
Assetto Corsa

Just a few of the, non MMO and RTS, PC exclusives from the last few years, off the top of my head. None of which would run on a PS2.

Also, you are dismissing indie games far too easily. Some of the best games in the last few years are indie games. Throwing heaps of money at a developing game, does not make it good. If anything, you are left with a whole bunch of average sequels.

While there are a decent selection of games on console. They simply cannot touch the amount of choice you have PC, even when restricted to a single genre. Not only is there a vaster selection of games, but there is also a far superior selection of GOOD games.

torchlight 2 might to be fair, though i do agree with you in the last few years it seems most console games or really AAA titles in general have been a bit underwhelming, i can't speak for everyone but i can say without a doubt the most fun i had this year was from indie titles like path of exile or valdis story or rogue legacy, outside of a few notable exceptions AAA titles were just plain run of the mill shooters, which sadly is all we see on consoles now, shooters or sports games.

when consoles start getting amazing rpgs or platformers that i don't see on a pc then i might complain but for right now the only console i'd see that happening on is the wii u1

Not to mention that AAA games nowdays are mostly horrible, and it doesn't matter if it's a console AAA game or a PC AAA game.
The ammount of games you can select from for PC tho is much much larger than anything the consoles have to offer, and I am talking about good games. Lots of indie games these days have a higher quality standard then even the AAA games, and are of course PC exclusive.

That is why I don't own a console...I am sucker for strategy games. Though I probably shouldn't had said the PS2 comment...as there are open source graphic engines that are actually quite impressive visually these days. However, I could never put something like Chivalry or Red Orchestra 2 on the same level as BF3 for example...and Bullet Storm is a port from the 360. DOTA 2 is a MMO. Bohemia and Tripwire while being good are still a far cry from being major publishers. I've forgotten about CS:Go though...that would probably be one.

However, there are all sorts of games off this list I'd love to be able to play that are definitely in the AAA range...but I don't own any consoles and probably never will...and that isn't even a complete list. For example one game I've been itching to play is Red Dead Redemption and it is only on the 360

Why not? It could be argued that RO2 is a better game than BF3. BF3 (and 4) is severely let down by its dodgy "netcode".

No one mentioned this game.

League Of Legends hardly.

And what constitutes a "major publisher". For me and a lot of other people Arma 3 was a major release. It is one of the reasons I upgraded my machine this year.

Being a major publisher does not mean they make good games. Look at the mess EA has made of BF4, or the never ending cloning of Call of Duty.

There is just no way consoles can compete when it comes to the number of quality exclusives.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/105oDn_pPAm5mwphk9zwSO_oexcVBkMI1_5XQbg74_8M/edit

That list is from 2000 -2013. While the list you linked goes back to 2005.

I'm not saying that consoles don't have some good exclusives. But they just cannot approach the quantity and quality of PC exclusives.

Well I'd prefer a list that only went back three years. The years 2000 through about 2004 was probably the PC gaming haydays. Of course there are going to be tons of great PC games from back then and even though I have the entire Baldur's Gate series on my OS install images and believe that no game to date can match it. You eventually need something new.

I probably should not really even be saying any of this since I play nearly primarily little known inde games since...yeah...they always seem more fun lately. The difference I think with the AAA games is that I might re-install those down the road. While I had a blast playing Orcs Must Die and Defense Grid...I will probably never install them again. However, if I could play some of the RPGs that consoles get that PCs never do...I'd replay those all the time...especially if I could actually mod them.

It could be just a case of the grass is greener on the other side too. I just hate reading about a good game and not getting the ability to play it. Yet you never hear a console player crying about ARMA 3 being a PC exclusive. I suppose if I looked I might find one, but they would have to be rare. Not to mention that while the PC platform might have a lot of games...I'd go as far to say that only maybe 20% of them are actually anything that many people want to play...but then quality is often an opinion too. I am sure I play a lot of games that the total number of players world wide has never topped a couple thousand.
