OC Northwood with BSEL pin mod, which CPU to try?

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
I have a Dell Dimension 2400, which has no overclocking options in the BIOS. Yes, I know, the best solution is to get a new computer, but this is a family computer and I have no reasonable chance of replacing it anytime soon.

It currently has a P4 2.8GHz, 533MHz bus.

The best "non-overclocked" CPU available for this computer is a 3.06GHz Northwood with Hyperthreading. That's not a huge increase for what it would cost to get one. Plus, I'm not sure I want Hyperthreading, because I mainly want to upgrade the CPU for games, and from what I understand, Hyperthreading can actually degrade game performance in some cases.

So, another option would be to get a 400MHz bus Northwood and pin mod it to run at 533MHz bus. Here are the original and overclocked speeds for three CPUs I am considering:

2.4 -> 3.2
2.5 -> 3.33
2.6 -> 3.47

Does anybody have any recomendations on which one would be the best to try?

I am thinking the 2.4 @ 3.2GHz might be the safest option, because I'm not sure a 2.6 could reach 3.47GHz reliably. I also don't want to have to increase the voltage much since Northwoods supposedly burn out easily when that is done.

This is alot of Hearsay really. Hyperthreading splits the Cycles in half however wont make any difference to games. Even if it did its only going to be like 1 FPS
