Admin rights to an application (Adobe Reader related)

Thread Starter
This is interesting. Now there's a stupid but mandatory application for a pharmacy. Badly written from what i can tell. Here in Turkey, the prescriptions are saved on a government website and this app opens a tamed IE as a window. Whatever you do, it transfers to its own database for various reasons, inventory, reporting etc.

Now this government website uses PDF for reports. Here's the issue, this app often freezes itself, much less in admin mode even on admin account on Windows 8.0. When I select "Run this program as administrator" there's a problem. The web site offers a PDF file whenever you wanna print something, and you click OPEN then ADOBE READER opens the file and you print right. But not in "Run this program in administrator" mode. Then 2 adobe executables run in background and do nothing.

So what gives ? Adobe can't access a file from an admin level application ? It doesn't work when I put Adobe in admin mode either. I suspected that when you put an app in admin mode, it might use a different location for temp files and that it would be protected but, I'd never be sure since i'm not familiar with win8 or win7 environment that much. There's no permission problems, UAC is disabled. The app's folder is accessible by "Everyone". I can't figure out why adobe wouldn't read a file from an admin app.

Because starting in Windows 8, UAC is always enabled.  When you set it to "Never notify" the elevation messages are simply suppressed.  To actually disable UAC, open Registry Editor and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" and set "EnableLUA" to 0.

So you are saying that the application triggers a warning about ADOBE wanting to do something and it doesn't display it because I have set UA to "never notify" ? So the warning is lingering in background and ADOBE waiting for it to be handled by user. Which is why adobe just hangs in background ?

Dear god man !

No, the reason is that by default in Windows 8, even with UAC set to "Never notify", all programs are started in restricted mode unless specifically set to "Run as Administrator".  The problem is, there is both a network authentication barrier and a internal communication barrier between programs running in restricted mode and programs running as Administrator.  So you run your program as Administrator, click "Open", and Adobe Reader starts in restricted mode (even though you have UAC off, which would work perfectly in Windows 7), and your Admin level application can't ask Adobe Reader to do anything because of the communication barrier between Admin programs and restricted programs. tongue.gif

Just make the registry change mentioned in my first post, and reboot for it to take effect.  If you want to revert back, just set "EnableLUA" back to 1. thumb.gif

EDIT: Please let me know if the registry edit works for you.  I just thought of another way to do it that might work without disabling UAC.  Since I'm not sure if it will work, I want you to try the "more sure" way first (disabling UAC) just to make sure you can get it working before we try my new idea. smile.gif

The registry method worked. The application can call adobe and adobe opens the document. When I changed the registry, windows immediately asked me to restart if I wanted to really turn UAC off with a bubble message from Action Center. Nice detail from MS.

So thank you, it works, for now biggrin.gif This app is really for XP. I suspect they never changed the code to take new things from 7 or 8 into account. It also crashes if I don't put it on DEP exception list. However, sometimes it just goes into Not Responding mode like it's waiting for something. I also think it might be about old Access DB file it's using. If this is somehow related to UAC not really off, even better now.

Btw, what's the other method anyway ?

Glad to hear that it works now! smile.gif

The other (more secure) way: Set "EnableLUA" back to 1 and reboot.  Do the operation that causes the two Adobe processes to hang in the background.  Open Task Manager, go to the Process tab, and do this to both hanging processes:

  • Right-click the process and click Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab.
  • Tick "Run as Administrator" and click [OK].

Log off and back on and see if it works now.  If not, there may be another process that needs elevated.  If need be, Process Explorer displays the process list in a tree that may help you find other programs that need elevated.  Getting to the needed option is little more difficult in Process Explorer:

  • Right-click the process and click Properties.
  • Go to the Image tab and click [Explore] (the one for "Path").
  • After Explorer opens and selects the program, right-click it and click Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab.
  • Tick "Run as Administrator" and click [OK].
  • Close the Explorer window.

I hope this method works for you also.  If not, you know one that does. thumb.gif
