Yes I do have faith in AMD's plans, because what OP faces now, I faced 2 years ago when I was to dump my my dual core Lenovo machine for a newer better hardware since I was to do my engineering projects and stuff like software development/programming, MATLAB/SIMULINK, video transcoding, compression/encryption, and all such others.
I never had AMD in my mind, but then I thought that trend moved from 1-core to 2-core and then to quads, so it wont take a lot of time to for softwares to fully utilize the 8-core AMD FX, I opted for 8150. Now I'm completely satisfied, actually over-satisfied and over-whelmed by its performance.
It would have been a lot better if AMD added quad channel memory support to 7850k, since RAM has always been biggest bottleneck to APUs iGPU performance, quad-channel would have just added the cream to the tasty beautiful cake, since that's what they did with Hawaii Pro/XT

My proc when OC'ed to 4.2 gives an AES encryption speed of 3.5 GB/s, could compress the 10.5 GB Saints row 3 folder to 7zip in less than 10 min, that is why I say OP should go for either i7 or FX-83xx

Thread Starter
You guys have been a great help, i was wondering if anyone might be able to help me do some oc'ing too if anyone knows much about doing it to the phenoms...

Overclocking on phenoms is not different from the FX, refer to http://www.overclock.net/t/525113/phenom-ii-overclocking-guide
Have good cooling, maintain the limits of voltage and temperature, everything else is trial-n-error. I'm an FX overclocker so maybe someone else could help you better with phenom II, just one advice, don't lose patience, overclocking is not for faint hearted and impatient peoples since you will experience quite a number of crashes, instability, freezing, uncomfortable temperatures random restarts, etc... before you find the sweet spot the stable settings for your overclocked phenom II. I know it sounds too philosophical but this is what overclocking is, welcome to overclocking wink.gif
