Installing Win 8.1 on a Win 7 system

Thread Starter
I couldn't find a clear answer about this, but I'd like to do a clean installation of 8.1 on my SSD and I'm not sure with that's what upgrading to 8.1 from 7 does anyway (if I choose not to bring personal files) or if I'll need to reformat first. Also, the copy of windows I have seemed like an upgrade, but it didn't specificially mention it like win 7 upgrade copies used to. Is Windows 8.1 available as an upgrade (from retail) or is it only a full version?

Never-mind, apparently it's not just an upgrade copy.

upgrade copies can be used as full copies as long as it detects a previous version of windows. just select custom and install like its a full version
