GetDeviceRemovedReason error on Gainward 780 GTX GLH

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
Hi to everybody!
This is my configuration

Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Hero
CPU: Intel i7 4770K
VGA: Gainward 780GTX GLH
PSU: Seasonic M12-700
OS: Windows 8.1

When I play Battlefield 4, I get the following error:
DirectX function "GetDeviceRemovedReason" failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG ("The applicatoin's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the applications. This is an design-time issue that should be investiaged and fixed. ").

When I play Call of Duty Ghosts
Direct3DDevice::Present failed (DEVICE REMOVED): DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG (-2005270523)

When I run 3DMark 11
Workload work failed with error message: eva::d3d11::rendering::scene_renderer::render(): draw_unshadowed_illumination_task for thread 0: File: device_context.cpp
Line: 515
Function: struct ID3D11CommandList *__cdecl eva::d3d11::deferred_device_context::do_finish_com mand_list(bool)

Expression: native()->FinishCommandList( restore_deferred_context_state, &result): DX11 call failed.

Device hung due to badly formed commands.
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG: ID3D11DeviceContext::FinishCommandList:

The errors come randomly, sometimes after some seconds, sometimes after some minutes.

The Gainward 780 GTX GLH comes with overclocked values
Default clock: 980 MHz (instead of 863 MHz)
Boost clock: 1033 MHz (instead of 900 MHz)
Memory clock: 1550 MHz (instead of 1500 MHz if I remember correctly)

I have read around the web that lots of people get the same errors but it isn't related on GLH cards, 780 GTX, nVidia, games or operating system. It happens also on ATI on Win 7.
I have read also many workaround:
- I tried with nVidia 331.82, 331.93 beta, 332.21 drivers and everytime I use Display Driver Uninstaller
- it isn't related to VGA heat, it is watercooled and it keeps 22°C circa under load
- I don't think it's a PSU problem as I have a 700W (just 1 VGA, 1 SSD, 1 HDD, 1 pump, 1 T-Balancer)
- I have tried to downclock it, I get better results but sooner or later I will get the same errors

I don't know if changing VGA will be a useful test as I think I will change too many variables.
Maybe testing the VGA on an other system? Please let this test for last as I should disassemble the liquid cooling system tongue.gif

Any idea or any other test I can do? frown.gif

To rule out OS corruption. If you have an extra spare drive lying around. Put a fresh copy of windows and run some benchmarks. Are you still getting the same error?

Usually that error comes from an unstable overclock. When did this problem start?

In my experience, it is either a driver problem or an overclocking problem.
