Arctic Accelero S1 Plus, passively cooling GTX 660 (non-Ti).

So I got a mint condition GTX 660 from my friend today for cheap. I want to use it in a quiet build. I've already sorted out the CPU cooler (this).

Now, the Arctic Accelero S1 Plus is rated for 120W, and the GTX 660 has a TDP of 140W. But according to this review, It adequately cools a 151W rated 5850 in 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11. I can't find any benchmarks for the GTX 660 with the Accelero S1 Plus, though.

Is it safe to assume that the Accelero S1 Plus will be able to cool the GTX 660, given that the 5850 technically runs hotter? I don't need to overclock it at all, despite seeing that this 660 is a nice clocker.

It will be inside an Aerocool Dead Silence Micro ATX case. There will be a 200mm front intake fan and a Phanteks 140mm fan in the back. Is that enough airflow for the passively cooled GTX 660?

Yes. I've done it with a 7850 and it was fine. Just some gentle airflow was all it needed.

It's been a couple months, have you had a chance to install the S1 Plus on your GTX 660? If so, any results?

Wow, its really dead here.
I am about to try AC S3 on my GTX660 sometimes next week, if anyone is interested.

Still dead. Either way, I put S3 on my 660. Well I am disappointed. I didnt expect temps to be 50 top, but that it gets to almost 89 degrees (where MSI shuts down) is a sad surprise. I think the advertised 135W is a lie, or-is a laboratory-only possible thing.

Not that 5W is much more, but a 660 is a 140W GPU, and that's without overclocking. So to be fair the 660 would be on the hot side for passive. What's your case ambient and GPU orientation?

I ended up putting an S1 on mine with a single 120mm fan on it using zip ties, NF-S12a. I used a GPU PWM adapter cable to connect the fan directly to the 660 and put a low noise adapter in between, it was silent and I never exceeded mid 60s.

Afterwards I did basically the same as you. But I am using S3 wich has the additional backplate for GPU. It really helps spreading the heat a lot. But at least a small amount of airflow is needed, as completely passive it was getting hot. I put 92mm Noctua underneath the GPU running at 1000rpm: http://cdn.overclock.net/7/7b/7b3e3f85_IMG_20150721.png
I have one more fan on CPU and thats it. PSU is passive, no intake or outtake fans. It is really quiet, the noisiest thing is HDD

Oh okay, your heat makes sense then. With no intake or outtake the ambient would just keep increasing, with them you might have been able to run passive, but it looks like what you've got works. They're surprising coolers when you attach a fan to them. I miss how quiet it was, when compared to my new 970 100ME.

As an aside, get an SSD and ditch that mechanical already. biggrin.gif I didn't realize just exactly how much noise my mechanical produced until I switched.
