The Blackbox - 7850k Kaveri Build

Thread Starter
There's nothing like gaming on a PC. With my buddies moving back into PC gaming, I thought so should I. I'd join them after about 7 years of console gaming. So much has changed since I last built a PC and it's lots of fun, reminds me why I used to love building PCs. I've been reading non-stop about the Kaveri and steam machine and quite honestly, the steam machine is a fantastic idea. This is my take on a steam machine. I call it, the Blackbox.

Comparison of the largest small dog in the world, Milkshake.

Gigabyte FM2+ F2A88XN-WIFI Mini ITX

I thought external wifi is the stupidest thing in the world in a mini itx form factor, so I made it internal.

Super high tech wifi antenna retention system.

Gotta love that tacky looking annoying blue light...

Corsair CX500M, Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Ridgeback 16GB 2133mhz. Out of all the times my mild OCD kicks in, it kicked in when I realized my Mushkin and Corsair items were green and black while my power light is blue... this is a big problem. In fact a major problem.

Picked up 2.1v-2.8v green LEDs from radioshack. Output voltage was 2.847v but the LEDs managed to work fine. They were a lot bigger so the power button couldn't be pressed so I used two LEDs and wrapped them around the power button instead of under the button.

Green is good!

The specs currently:
Gigabyte FM2+ F2A88XN-WIFI Mini ITX
Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Ridgeback 16GB 2133mhz
Corsair CX500M 500W PSU with the fan reversed for positive pressure
OCZ Vertex III 120GB SATA III SSD
Hitachi Deskstar 500GB SATA II HDD

The planned parts:
AMD A10 7850K APU
PowerColor TurboDuo R9 270
Zalman CNPS8900 Quiet

You should get 2 SSDs/HDDs so you can get both Steam OS and Win7.If you don't know, using the APU with the GPU is a bit of a waste of the iGPU.But most people buy that since AMD isn't planning an FX update before 2015 in the Excavator architecture. So I'll guess you're one.

I agree using a dGPU is wasting the iGPU but in the end I'm guessing it'll be better than dual graphics with a 7750. Dual booting SteamOS and Windows 8 seems like a very intriguing idea that I'll need to look into.

I heard you can't boot both on the same drive. So you may consider using something like an external HDD cage or booting from an external HD.I'm actually very keen to find out the dual graphics performance.I don't blame you for not choosing it.In the current state,it throws up torn half-frames that benchmarking software count as entire frames.Needless to say,you can't use the iGPU for anything beyond low settings in games like Metro or Crysis. If the dual graphics is refined enough like crossfire though, you can look forward to getting great value for money results with a low end gpu paired up.I reccommend you wait till the Kaveri announcement before getting the R9.Maybe AMD will surprise us!

Nice little box.
I want to build similiar pc and I've got question about pc cooler.
I've picked up zalman
CNPS8900 Quiet cooler
and I'm wondering if it won't be too big to block my
DDR3 set CT51264BA160BJ x2
on my motherboard
ASRock H81M-ITX ???

Will all of this fit inside
DIYPC V3Plus-B
case?

Keep in mind the cnps8900 is quite huge and by height will fit inside the v3 case. Your main problem will be if it'll fit your motherboard without touching anything like the ram or pcie slot. I bought one to try but it does not fit my motherboard due to ram touching. For a cooler, find one that isn't taller than 80mm. I had a hard time finding components that will fit inside the v3 case so this build will turn into a mitx v4 case build due to poor planning with the video card. If you have the option the v4 is a few inches bigger, supports matx/mitx, 120mm cooler, 260mm dgpu, and 3 80mm fans.

I ordered that chasis for my SteamBox. I'm going to reconfigure the case to my needs even set it up to have an acrylic decal. Sadly I'm using my a10-5800k to power it. My a10-7850k is in my Prodigy case and water cooled.

THUMBS UP!! NICE BUILD!

@SuperHiro - zalman is big but your memory radiators are impressive also.
Maybe if I use low profile memory like the ones in my previous post it will be alright?

Here we can see the comparsion between low profile and high profile ddr's:

Nice, that water cooled kaveri sounds awesome! I looked at the prodigy cases and they're perfect for my build but I don't find them aesthetically pleasing so now I'm battling space issues with the R270. When my paycheck rolls through tomorrow I'm going to pick up the kaveri at the local MicroCenter and order one of these from Newegg.

Bigger brother to replace the V3. I'll end up using the V3 for another SteamBox.

Ahh I didn't catch that you plan to use low profile ram. In that case, you should be alright. The height clears the 80mm clearence for the case as it's only 60mm tall.

R7 260x is most of the time enough for most games for me, and I predict with all the optimizations coming out it'll probably be my last card for a few years. The latest bios on the Mobo doesn't seem like overclocking. I emailed Gigabyte I hope they'll jump on resolving it.
