How to use a single domain for two different servers?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm looking to add a blog as a subdomain that's being hosted on a different server than the main site.

More details

Main Site is at Server A.
Blog is at Server B.
Domain is linked to Server A.
How to add server B as a subdomain?

I'd like the blog to use this domain format: blog.domain.com.

Many thanks!
Mr. X

Should just be an A record on your DNS server pointing to server B for blog.domain.com.

This. However not all nameservers "allow" you to do this. If this is the case, I'd recommend changing to a better nameserver. I have two different domains, each having 2-10 subdomains, all pointing to different servers without any problems. All I had was what beers said; add an A record to the nameserver for the correct subdomain.

Most nameservers support also wildcard subdomains, meaning that you can point *.blog.example.com to server B while *.example.com is pointed to server A. this can be useful if you want to "dynamically" have subdomains, for example: smithers.blog.example.com and ocn.blog.example.com without having to configure the nameserver manually for each of these. (However, to display different contents for these while having them on the same server (same IP) needs you to configure your webserver accordingly. This is the same as most "web hosting sites" do, all user domains point to the same IP, but the web server decides what content to show based on the request URI)

For anyone who cares this is known as virtual hosts in Apache (and probably other web servers too).
