[The SSD Review] OCZ To Release New Vertex 460 Retail SSD – CES 2014 Update

Our visit to OCZ at CES 2014 brought forward news that they have been working on a new consumer SSD, this SSD being the first example of things to come as it is the result of a new partnership between OCZ and Toshiba. Not only does the new Vertex 460 contain Toshiba’s latest advanced 19nm MLC Toggle Mode NAND flash memory, but also, the Barefoot 3 M10 controller is the final product of both OCZ and Toshiba as a team.

LINK

Well well. It seems as if Toshiba is keeping OCZ's name. I figured that, thanks to the bad reputation, they would drop it and just keep the resources and release their own Toshiba Vertex or Vector or whatever SSDs. Nice to see RevoDrives return, albeit under a new name, too. Nice to see a new controller, or at least one I haven't heard of, too. I can't wait to see SSDs become mainstream and I bet it happens in mid-range laptops by the end of 2016.

I haven't had any issues out of my Vertex 4 ssd from OCZ nor have I had any issues out of my PSU which is a Silencer quad(I know its old) red from PC Power and Cooling (an offshoot of OCZ) so I cannot attest personally about them having a bad rep. However I have heard some pretty awful stories on the net about them. I put it down to just about anything that is mass produced is going to have lemons and defects because no quality control is perfect. The vertex 4 has performed excellently for anyone thinking about getting one. Its just a 128gb model but its super fast. My pc with windows 8.1 boots up in exactly 9 seconds. I cant complain about that lol. I hope to see them bring themselves a good name back. I don't know what this has to do with this post other than hoping that they do well but I wanted to say it...

OCZ itself wasn't bad per se, but the earlier Sandforce-based SSDs committed a slow suicide over the six months you'd own them before RMAing. Lots of people have had success, especially with more recent models, but I myself am not a huge fan of Sandforce controllers in general. Intel and Corsair (non-Neutron) use them and they seem to be popular picks though.

Keeping the name is a mistake, OCZ has such a bad rep. It's better to work rep from the beginning rather than a huge deficit. Besides, Toshiba SSDs sold pretty well during black friday, the Q series are decent performers and seem to be pretty reliable from what I've heard, so they had already built up a ltitle bit of positive rep. I don't really understand their marketing strategy here.

change the name, what are they thinking.

Yeah the OCZ name is far too tainted they should have dropped it. Too many people think of them as the company that makes dud products that die after only a few months (or weeks even) of use. Not to mention the bad rep their customer service is known to have. I immediately decided against buying an OCZ power supply when I read some of the responses they gave to negative reviews on Newegg that complained about a faulty product.

I have three OCZ SSDs in my system, never had a problem. Two Vertex 4s and one Vertex 3.

I think it's good they're keeping the name. People here on OCN think OCZ has a bad rep but most don't care they had 1 line of bad products. My Agility 2 and Vertex 4 are both going strong.

It wasn't just OCZ, it was most companies. I'm not sure if OCZ had it worse than others or if they were just one of the big-name brands originally and people equated SSD with OCZ.
