HP Laptop CPU temps ridiculously high

Thread Starter
I've known for a while that this laptop doesn't have great cooling. The fan constantly spins very loudly for no reason. I recently installed HWMonitor to check it out and, with the laptop on top of a cooling pad, the CPU temp reads 85-90 C at IDLE. At one point it spiked to 103 C- The only things open are chrome and HWmonitor. The fan does work because a jetstream of hot air comes out of the back when it does turn on. But why is it running so warm? CPU is an A6-4400M at 2.5 GHz

Okay. My brother has a Gateway FX Laptop, older model, and he was getting drastically high temps at one time as well. We did a few things.

First, I have to ask. What type of Laptop Cooler are you using?

Then I have to ask. Is the laptop still under warranty? If not, open it up and redo the TIM on the CPU and GPU.

If that still doesn't solve the problem you may have to look into doing a slight modification to the air intakes on the bottom of the case. My brother and I did all of the above. The modification we did on the intake grilles was to remove every other "bar" of the grille to allow more air. Once we did all those things we saw a drop for 90*c to around 72*c under full load

Problem for this dude is that he's getting ridiculous temperatures at idle. 85-90C is not normal or healthy at all for a laptop. If you are still under warranty I would suggest that you send that back in. If not, open the laptop up and clean out all of the dust and apply a new layer of tim on the CPU and GPU.

Cooling pad is a cooler master stand with two movable fans powered by USB. Don't know if the laptop is under warranty or not but I've been using it for about a year and a half now. And if installing linux voids the warranty, then it's gone.

Maybe try reading temp with a different program, but I don't know of any. It really seems like Windows should have this built-in by now. I used to have an i7 macbook pro that would get to over 100C in Minecraft (because we all know how apple sacrificed cooling and airflow efficiency in favor of making it shiny), and it would at that point be so hot you couldn't keep it on your lap very long. This laptop doesn't feel close to that hot, even right under the CPU, so maybe it's reading the temp wrong. HWMonitor claims it spiked to 113 C once, which I know for a fact would trigger the overheat protection shutdown on an i7 and probably on an AMD APU as well.

Blow some compressed air into the vents and report back afterwards. Hopefully that'll help the temperature issue for at least a short period.
