Hi guys

I have ordered the Gigabyte GV-R929OC-4GD-GA grapgic card.and i read a problem about heat while surfing on the web and watching youtube.the temps go above 80+.and then the card throttling its gpu speed from 1040mhz to 900 mhzs..here is the link to the problem;

http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/hardware-clinic-2/gigabyte-r9-290-4gb-windforce-4523954.html

is this a common problem or just for the person who started the thread? Have you seen anything or heard anything about the issues gigabyte r9 290 windforce have?

thanks in advance

Wasn't there a problem with the cooler where it was the wrong size or something and they had to stop mass production, then recently they fixed it. Just ordered a pc with an r9 280x bf4 edition rev.2 so I sure hope there isn't a problem rolleyes.gif.

Consumer cards weren't affected by the production problem AFAIK.

Your temps aren't normal. First thing I would do, make sure your drivers are up to date, make sure your case has good airflow etc.

Next, remount the cooler to make sure it's mounte properly. Take this oppurtunity to apply some aftermarket thermal paste to buy a few degrees extra in cooling.

Hopefully it's just a cooler mount issue. What does your card idle at? It should be between 28-32 degrees depending on your ambients temps.

When your card is warm when browsing or whatever, can you use gpuz or something to log the power usage/GPU usage, that way we can correlate cooling with usage and see if there a a discrepancy (that is, if we see low usage and high temps, we know it's a cooling/mounting issue; high usage and high temps is likely a software issue of some kind).

the pics i posted does not dont belong to my system..

but i have received my card and tested it about 1 hour .

gpu-z installed and was logging and also msi afterburner was open on my second monitor and i saw the temps were hitting 84 degrees in about 6 minutes while playing crysis 3.So the gpu speed 1040mhz was dropping to 800s and 900s..

my idle temps were about 40-41-42 degrees

then i removed the side panel of my case ,the room temp was about 18 degrees but the card did the same and easily hits the 84 ,throttles itself again.it was so annoying because i couldnt do mining at constant rate khash and couldnt play games at constant fps (first 5 minutes you can have max fps you can get and then it slows down)

the other point i realized was the temp never go above 84 degrees.ıs ıt because of throttling its gpu speed or is it something else that is fixed to 84 degrees?

cant i set it up like do not throttle the gpu speed whatever the temp is?

There is a new BIOS for your card with ELPIDA memory:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4920#bios

Try to check it out.
But base clock is 947MHz instead of 1040 with older BIOS.
Why?

How noisy is your Windforce 290 OC in idle and load?

i dont understand what is going on...

with everything on auto my ffan is %51 at max.

and it is nout loudy..

i dont know it is on uber or quite mode.the switch was on the position which is far from the hdmi ,dvi ports side..is that uber mode or quite ?

how can i arrange the max temp as 90 degrees or 95 degrees instead of 84 degrees?

i dont want it to decrease the gpu speed when it reaches to 84 degrees.is there anyway to stop that? and also i want to set my fan speed to %65 so that i can prevent decreasing the gpu speed..

I understand, who wants to decrease GPU speed.
But on the other side, there must be some reason, they post this newer BIOS with lower GPU speed....

EDIT: thought you were running 3 R9 290.

Here is the answer i got from the gigabyte

Thank you for kindly mail and inquiry. About the issue you mentioned, please click HERE to refer to FAQ to switch fan mode and then test again.

According to How To Reflash BIOS? in VBIOS download page--Please note:
You can only update to a BIOS version of the same series. If your VBIOS version is:
F1, it can only be updated with VBIOS versions F2-F9.
F10, it can only be updated with VBIOS versions F11-F19.
F20, it can only be updated with VBIOS versions F21-F29.

Please first confirm your original VBIOS with @BIOS , if the original VBIOS is F1 series, please update VBIOS F3L. Furthermore, VBIOS F3L is mainly to support fan control performance mode (SW1).

For @BIOS utility, please click HERE.
To download VGA BIOS, please click HERE. Please update VBIOS by choosing "FLASH" in @BIOS.

I asked them again why the gpu speed is downclocked to 947mhz and waiting for the reply again
