Call some friends, buy some beers, get the 320kbps(lossless) and 720kbps FLAC version of the same album, get a blindfold and do the test yourself! The results will speak for themselves. There is just no way one can hear the difference, even when they think they can, they will fail miserably at this test.

I did this with some friends whom are all into audio. Everyone brought their gear and we tested with multiple high & low-end headphones, DACs and amps. Our conclusion was anything above 320kbps is a waste of HD space.

I believe he is talking about the pleasure of even knowing that your audio is a lossless format.
Then you don't need to be able to define the difference in order to perceive it in a more pleasant (fuller) way. Call it even OCD - it is so.
They want the ultimate experience - this is their ultimate experience. Your ultimate experience is the borderline in practical and applicable, but they extend theirs to what is theoretically ultimate.

Now, audiophiles turning into snobs is a whole different story and this is entirely up to their persona, rather than the blind belief.

I agree with you that MP3 is sufficient. I tried AB'ing 320 MP3 and FLAC and couldn't tell the difference. Even 256 kbps MP3 is good enough that I can't reliably tell and wouldn't be able to without a direct comparison. For me, that means that I use 320 kbps MP3 for the size and the compatibility.

However, tompsonn is right that, assuming people can't tell the difference, the placebo does in fact make it sound better to that person anyway. So even if we could rule out the possibility that they actually can tell the difference between lossy and lossless, which we can't, then they should still use lossless because it sounds better to them.

There actually is a difference. On HiFi equipment the difference is much more pronounced, for obvious reasons. For obvious reasons yet again, the absence of good audio equipment might be why you don't hear a difference. There's also a huge difference from person to person in what frequencies can be heard and at what decibels.

My personal experience with FLAC or WAV versus MP3 V0 is that there is, indeed, a difference. On good audio equipment, subtleties that really add to my enjoyment of many songs (mostly busy music like rock) are completely missing from compressed versions. The twang of a bass strumming behind a busy guitar solo in my favorite 'Them Crooked Vultures" song, for instance, simply isn't there after compressed to MP3 V0. Meanwhile, if I play the same song in my car as opposed to my Sennheisers, that twang gets lost anyway.

Still, even more gets lost when piling all these instruments into two channels and then trying to put them through speakers that can't cleanly produce all of the sounds at once. Then you get into frequency separation.. sending bits to you sub, tweeters, mids or even surround center, backs, fronts, etc. Things get cut apart, buried, and lost through all of that.

So, yes. It's important to ensure that subtle bass twang doesn't get cut in half during compression, turning it into blotchy hissing sound before it gets sent to your speakers which then sorts that sound over to your rear left speaker where it gets amplified because it's not buried by guitar or drums. It's still music snobbery, but it does sound better.
