installing my xonar STX

Thread Starter
so after the helpful feed back I bought my asus xonar STX. im no computer wiz so when I purchased the card I asked the bloke to install it. he told me its something I can easily do myself. he did tell me it needed its own power supply.
so I have a 750w thermaltek tough Gold power supply. it has 2 out puts for PCI-E and about 6 PCI. my problem is I don't have the PCI-E pin to the 4 pin cable, I only have a cable that will fit the PCI port in the powersupply. my question is that ok? the card works and all. the only thig is I now here a clicking sound when I turn on my pc that didn't happen before. and I hear it when I choose the heaphone out put on the software. should I be hearing that?

I major concern is that just before Christmas I needed to get a warranty job on the pc that is no more than 3 mnths old. I reashered the problem and it was the power supply. so I took out the sound card and returned the pc as if I had no idea what happened. I did have a faulty power supply. so I now have a new one. my problem is I don't know if I caused it? I had the card installed for 2 weeks before the power supply died. I am running a PCI-E GTX780 off the power supply as well. should the 750w gold be enough?

As long as you got a 4-pin molex connected to the sound card and it's fully seated in the PCIe slot, you'll be OK. The molex plug will look like one of these:

The clicking you now hear is completely normal. The sound card has a few relays on it and they'll click when you boot up and power down. So nothing to worry about there. smile.gif

Regarding your PSU, it's doubtful that you did anything just by installing the sound card. It's really as simple as plugging in a molex connector to the sound card. And 750W should be lots of power for what you're running. TBH, it sounds like you might have just had a bad unit.

Also, don't forget to install the unixonar drivers, and to use xonarswitch instead of the normal Asus utility. You should check out the Xonar club here on OCN biggrin.gif

any reason why those drivers are better? sorry I just see it as a hassle. id probably screw something up
post #9 of 14
If anything, they're supposed to be hassle free, better updated and more stable than the Asus ones, but in reality, both are pretty good.

But XonarSwitch is awesome. The normal Asus utility has a bad habit of causing DPC latency issues/stuttering because it constanty polls the sound card, even in the background. Xonarswitch only polls the card when necessary. It also has a much cleaner UI, and it hides all the useless options like the "underwater" dsp effects while exposing some useful ones like per channel gain.
