The Z has an output impedance of 22, which is bad for use with low impedance HE400. The DAC isn't bad though, so I'd just return/sell the ZxR and use the Z with a new amp.

From what I remember about creative software, you can change any of the outputs to headphone mode and turn on simulated surround in the "gaming mode."

I run a titanium HD to a schiit magni into my HE-400's/Ultrasone PRO 550's and I love it.

The impedance 1/8th rule has been hyped beyond belief. On some headphones it applies (Sennheisers); on others, it does not. It will have an effect but only audionerds may notice.

SBZ may well be just as bad as the ZxR for driving the planarmagnetc HE-400. More research is necessary on this, but if you're going with the SBZ then tell us how you get on.

impedance doesn't matter when you're running an amp, headphones amps draw almost no current. the ZxR and Z have built in headphones amps and yes impedance matters in some cases (see above).

And the SB/SBX's DAC isn't that bad, is it? Is it really worth replacing? It's not bad at all, though not as good as the ZxR, nor is it's amplifier as good, but this isn't helping to explain what's gone wrong

However, I'm not familiar with the Zx/Zxr's surround software... can binaural software (SBX) only be used with the headphone out? It can be used in any mode: stereo or headphone, however as I pointed out, Creative elected to dumb down it's control panel for the new SBZ line...................... so basically no real surround headphone support on the line outs unlike the previous Creatives.

I'm out of here >>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yes I can confirm through several different tests I ran awhile back that hrtf on headphone out and line out is completely different. There is no custom option.

Speaker hrtf needs to add crosstalk cancellation as well as alter timings and frequency's due to possibly environmental issues(wall echo's etc.). It can not work like speakers sealed to your ears where only 1 speaker is heard by 1 ear.

And with no button like in the x-fi's, the control panel auto switches speaker mode and headphone mode sbx on its own.

Anyway this is a theory I've had from the start. And its been well proven by myself initially and others after.

A one sized fits all approach from creative is what you can expect nowadays. No more customization in the same way as the x-fi's.

Got a question about this if you dont mind.

SBZ optical > Fiio D03K > Schiit Magni 2 > Headphones

1: Decoding of DTS, Dolby Audio and SBZ streams by a DAC.
Got a Fiio D03K and it came with a notice that it could not Decode DTS and Dolby Audio streams. Are there any alternatives? I was looking at the Schiit Modi 2 Uber as I have the Mangni 2 ...but now i cant seem to find out if it will Decode DTS and Dolby or even SBX via Optical. Has anyone tested this at all?

Settings?
Windows Setting: 5.1 or 2.1? with SBZ S/PDIF selected as default playback device
Sound Blaster Software: 5.1, Stereo Direct or 2.1? with SBX ON

Other options:

OEM SBZ > Optical > FiiO D03K (this becomes the DAC) > RCA> O2/Magni Amp (very low impedance) > HE-400

Surround/EQ etc is retained on all the above three options doing this.

Seriously, have a very good look / research on Head-Fi; certainly in the HE-400 thread...... probably the better place to look with your specific HP's in this instance.

What would the windows settings be to enable Surround/EQ on headphones?

DDL and DTS = about no external DAC associated with stereo output will support this, and it's mostly meant for 5.1 speaker systems, to receive 5.1 audio over optical(TOSLINK) from the PC.

To have SBX and all other software features working over optical-out, you must keep the "SB-Z speakers" as default in windows playback devices.
Then just check the only setting under "advanced functions"(stereo-mix...) in the SB-Z control panel.

And finally it is the question, if the DAC of the D03K will perform better with the Magni 2, compared to just connecting the Magni to SB-Z's "HP-out" directly.

The Z has a built in amp... Is it a good idea to double amp?? Ran the Magni on its own from line 1 with Windows set to 5.1 and SBZ to headphone Had pretty good results and a higher bit rate from Windows too.

Will try straight out the HP socket as long as I know it's ok giving the SBZ has a 600ohm amp already.

HP-out of the SB-Z @100% windows volume is about 2.3 Volt or something(it's recommended to set windows vol. only to 70% with the SB-Z, to have digital headroom for SBX-surround tho).
That's close enough to the typical 2V of line-out devices, and compared to SB-Z line-out-> Objective2 vs. HP-out -> Objective2, there is only a marginal difference when i measure it with RMAA.
I highly doubt that the little Fiio would measure better(if anything of this would actually be audible is another question tho tongue.gif).
