Looking for a monitor for PC and console use.

Thread Starter
Will a 1080p signal look weird or distressed in any way on a 1440p monitor? If a screen is going to be used for both PC and console, is it a better idea to drop down to a 1080p panel?

I had a 1440p Korean Shimian and they'd be great but for the lack of ports. I will be limited to one screen for my next build and need something that can cover my PC and console needs. Can I ask for some help choosing one? redface.gif

Requirements:

Display Port and HDMI
IPS/PLS high quality panel (nice colours/contrast etc.)
$400 dollars or under (and if I'm spending that kind of money, can't be a knock-off model)

Would really like:

1440p
OR 1080p 3D

Not a requirement but would be nice:

Low Response time. I'm not super big into FPS but my K/D is a joke tongue.gif

Any monitors that fit the bill? Thanks in Advance.

1440p + console = Waste of money

Yes it will look off compared to native like any scaled resolution. With a console you actually do want the fastest response time because FPS doesn't really matter as consoles run at barely 30FPS anyway. Fast response will cut down your motion blur and increase your ability to see things clearly at fast speeds.

The best console display is going to be a very fast response IPS or PLS panel with 1080p. Anything more is a feature you wont be able to use on a console.

EDIT: Heck even the xbox1 doesn't even run games at 1080p(1600x900 upscaled to 1080p)

It kind of depends on what you use more. If you mostly use your PC, I would go for the 1440p. If the inverse is true, 1080p. You also said you have a 1440p monitor now (or at least used to). I would, if you still have it available, try to connect a console to that monitor and see what you think in terms of how it looks.

His current 1440p monitor does not have a scaler thus cannot work with a console due to the fact that console gfx card do not have an internal scaler.

Ah, ok. I didn't catch/know that. Though, my opinion still stands. Decide based on what you use most, pc or console.

Sorry, I was unclear. I am moving abroad so had to sell my Shimian.

I'm more of a PC gamer, maybe 70/30?

Maybe I could get a 1080p for now, then maybe get another Korean monitor down the way.

So maybe a feature rich 1080p IPS/PLS for $400 or under? 3D would be nice but with Oculus coming out...

Low m/s would be good but again, not a big competitive gamer.

DisplayPort and HDMI a must though.
Well I don't have a suggestion for an IPS/PLS 1080p monitor, but the Asus VG248QE fits the rest of your points if IPS/PLS is something you are willing to sacrifice. As far as I can tell, based on Newegg, the lowest response time on an IPS/PLS monitor is 5ms. Here are Newegg's 1080p monitors that fit the IPS/PLS and DisplayPort+HDMI requirements.

incorrect. ive used my achieva shimian many times with my 360. you have to set the resolution on the xbox to 1280x720 manually before hooking it up to the 1440 monitor.

How'd you do this? Some kind of HDMI/DVI converter?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe there is an option in the 360's settings somewhere to manually set it as opposed to having it use auto detect. I would assume that you have to plug it into a different display in order to do that (based on the "before hooking it up to the 1440 monitor" statement).
