How'd you do this? Some kind of HDMI/DVI converter?

yep just one of these

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812270286

or you can use a DVI to HDMI cable which is what i used because i couldnt fit the adapter on the back of the monitor due to design.

I would assume that you have to plug it into a different display in order to do that (based on the "before hooking it up to the 1440 monitor" statement).

yes you have to go into the video settings and manually select 1280x720, i just hooked it up to my tv to do it.

What's AH-IPS? No good?
its just a version of IPS. it works just like the rest.

out of curiosity i just hooked up my XBone to my shimian, fired right up and automatically displayed as 480p and i was able to go into setting and change it to 720p.

Are you able to push the resolution even higher?

tried 1080p and it wouldnt display it, which makes sense because there is no scaler in the monitor.

I know that you can do it this way but honestly a native 1080p monitor looks MUCH better than a scalerless 1440p monitor running rigged 720p upsampling. Plus every time i tell someone that the can do it this way i end up having to walk them through the process(step wise) just for them to find out it looks like crap. You can check my older posts it has happened several times. I have done this myself and can personally say that even a TN panel looks better using it this way which is completely opposite of what the OP is wanting.

OK I'm still trying to lock down a reasonably priced, IPS 1080p monitor that has DisplayPort and HDMI. Anyone have a suggestion? I'm thinking something from Asus or similar?

This monitor would be perfect if it wasn't for the matte screen/no DP:

Anyone? Is this monitor fine? Anyone know of something similar in spec and price with maybe glossy and DisplayPort?

As far as I can tell, AH-IPS is about the best for picture quality, here is a Crossover 27" for $420
