GTX 780 Stable yet Unstable???

Thread Starter
I have a Gigabyte GTX 780 OC Windforce Rev 2.0 Video Card.

I have overclocked it to 3416 x 2 on the memory (405Mhz offset) and 1202MHz boost (117MHz offset) @1.200V

I ran Unigene Valley for about 4 hours with no crashes at all. Then when I run Planetside 2, Total War Shogun 2, Napoleon Total War and even Crysis 3 it crashes to hell. Like I mean a black screen and a catastrophic buzzing sound occurs, forcing me to restart my PC.

This doesn't seem to happen on Metro LL and Far Cry 3 at all.

I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit with 331.93 Beta Drivers.

Is it simply the applications fault or my GTX 780 is unstable?

Btw I recently lowered my ram timings, which was rated for 10-10-10-30 to 9-9-9-24 @1600Mhz G-Skill, not sure if that is causing instability ?
The fact that Far Cry 3 doesn't give you issues alone leads me to believe that it is your RAM acting up from the tighter timings.

In my experience, GPU overclocks that have been stable in many other games and benchmarking, crash Far Cry 3 unless I give it more volts. FC3 seems to be very very sensitive to overclocks, and since your copy runs fine, I'd say your GPU is stable, and that you should kick your RAM back to 10-10-10-30 and try your other games. thumb.gif

Also, in the past when playing with RAM timings, If I ran my timings too tight, certain games would throw me a black screen and a buzzing audio loop. Loosening them back up fixed it, It was fun trying to find the sweet spot lol tongue.gif

I could play Far Cry 3 for hours and hours, but would crash within minutes running FFXIV benchmark. So the story about FC3 as the ultimate GPU stability test is not true. There are many more fragile titles out there.

Ok so I reset the timings back to normal, yet on Planetside 2 I still get the crazy audio buzzing loop sound then the screen came back on with default clock speeds. This means that my GPU is unstable? Btw I decreased the GPU clock from 117+ to 110+ and memory from 405 to 400 in EVGA Precision.

Also, in PS2, my GPU is only being used at 50% at a clock speed of 797MHz so it isn't even being used? Why on earth would it crash?

You should have seen the first problem I had. Bought the card, and I couldnt even run any 3D application without the card and PC catastrophically failing. I restarted about 100 times (YES 100 Times!) before I switched to the 2nd PCI slot, which worked, then back to the top slot, now it worked great.

However I dunno what the issue is now...

I found that +225 on core @ 1.212v without mem OC = stable in every app, even in BF4 for me. I'll try to push mem a bit.
Good luck with your OC. Feel sorry for your first startup fail.

Ok so.. 117+ core and 405+ memory. I can somehow play FAR CRY 3 maxed out, ranging between 40-130fps. Played for 1 hour, no problem!

Planetside 2 however, instant crash within 2 minutes. It isn't a stopped working error, but a crazy system freeze and stuff up. I just don't get... even Napoleon Total War has minor freezes when playing, but Metro Last Light, no problem!

WHAT IS HAPPENING LOL!
