Help me choose a SSD

Thread Starter
OK so I have some money left over from christmas and decided to treat my self to an PC upgrade namely an SSD. As I'm still using an old x58 motherboard that only has SATA II I'm less interested in raw top speed and more in reliability. I'm assuming all thees drives are plenty fast anyway.

Due to price and availability I've narrowed down the choices to thees three drives

PNY 240GB XLR8 SSD, 2.5", MLC, SATA III 6GB/S

Controller : SandForce SF 2241 / SF 2281
Memory : 3K P/E Endurance
NAND Components : Multi-Level Cell (MLC)
Form Factor : 2,5"
Connectors : SATA III / 6G
Max Read : up to 500 MB/s
Max Write : up to 450 MB/s
Random Read/Write 4KB (Aligned): up to 60,000 IOPS
TRIM support (requires OS support)

Price: 149.90 €

Kingston 240GB SSDNow V300, 2.5", SATA III

Controller : SandForce SF 2241 / SF 2281
Memory : 3K P/E Endurance
NAND Components : Multi-Level Cell (MLC)
Form Factor : 2,5"
Connectors : SATA III / 6G
Max Read : up to 500 MB/s
Max Write : up to 450 MB/s
Random Read/Write 4KB (Aligned): up to 60,000 IOPS
TRIM support (requires OS support)

Price: 149.90 €

SAMSUNG 840 Evo Series 250GB SSD SATA3 6Gb/s 2.5inch

SAMSUNG 3-core MEX-Controller
SAMSUNG 1x nm Toggle DDR 2.0 NAND flash
SAMSUNG 512MB DDR2 cache

Max Read : up to 540MB/s
Max Write : up to 520MB/s
4KB Random Read(QD1): 10000 IOPS
4KB Random Write(QD1): 33000 IOPS
4KB Random Read(QD32): 97000 IOPS
4KB Random Write(QD32): 66000 IOPS
Connectors : SATA III / 6G

Price: 168 ,10 €

So which drive do you guys think i should go for. The Kingston and PNY are nearly identical in terms of specs so it comes down to software on thous. The Samsung drive seams like the best but is it worth the extra price?

The Samsung EVO is the best of the three you listed, and worth the extra cost.

Samsung makes all the major components of their SSDs (controller, firmware, and NAND), while Kingston and PNY make none of those components. The Samsung software is far better than either of the others.

The Samsung is faster than those other drives, and its components are all much newer designs than what the others use.

While all the SSDs you listed are more budget oriented drives, the EVO performance in some aspects is the best of any consumer SSD.

I'd go for the Samsung. The premium price is well worth it. Have you also considered ADATA SSDs? They give you a little more storage, because they removed some backup program, however I can't recall the exact name. I am rocking the SP900 128GB and I love it.

I did consider the A-Data 256GB XPG SX900 but its currently out of stock so yeah I guess the 840 Evo really is the way to go then. Ugh, I'm all ready dreading the reinstall process it's going to going to take fricking forever to get everything setup again.

Samsung is the best. Avoid SandForce, those controllers are no longer #1 and generally suffer from slow incompressible data writes.

Yeah I went out and bought the 840 EVO. Ended up getting an 1TB Caviar blue as well while I was at it. It will make it easier to rearrange all my files and having just 1.3TB of storage is so 2009 anyway tongue.gif So now I actually have 4 drives in my PC. The old main drive the Samsung F1, the even older 300GB WD that serves as backup and now the two new drives the 840 EVO and 1TB caviar blue.

I'm still in the early stage of getting things running. Asus express gate is messing with stuff again. Man that has got to be the worst piece of firmware ever. It sucks so hard thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

I did encounter some weird crap after I plugged in the new drives like for instance when I try to reach the google home page I get an error

Nah. It wasn't hard to fix. It was just due to the system clock resetting back to 01.01.2002 tongue.gif Now if only I could get the SSD to actually show up in the bios headscratch.gif
