As the title says....

Which would perform better a laptop with first generation i5 OR a desktop with 2nd generation i3?

These two aren't normally compared.... but there's a reason I would like to know.

My work laptop will not get replaced by the company until December. But I am not happy with its performance already. I happen to have a desktop that I can use in the office temporarily - so I am thinking weather or not I would just migrate my stuff to the desktop or just reformat my laptop.

Here are some conditions.

1. They will not be used for gaming.
2. Apps that would be used are office apps, windows 7, toad, terra term.

2nd gen desktop i3 should be faster. But for office stuff your cpu doesn't even matter. You just need a fast hard drive.

For some reason CPU does matter.
I've been monitoring performance of the laptop for a long time. And I just mentioned some of the applications that were obviously installed. There's a lot of bloatware that gets installed by the ****ty network push from the IT we have.

The i3 will be significantly faster. While the arrandale chips weren't terrible, the sandybridge architecture is far superior. You will lose the portability of a laptop with going with the desktop, however if your purely concerned with performance, the i3 is the better option.

Hmmm what I plan is to still have the laptop set up with the same applications. And then just have my outlook archive directories in an external HDD.

I'll keep the laptop at home and then when I work at home and when I go to work I'll work on the desktop. And just bring my HDD.

I'm not a hipster who likes to "work" in starbucks or where ever. It's either home or work office.
