Low budget Laptop for EE and CS major

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so as the title says, I'm a broke college student looking for a laptop/tablet or mobile device that I can use while on campus. At home I have a decent rig so any CAD and other heavy tasks will be taken care of there. The rest will hopefully be answered by the following:
What is your maximum budget?
Around 600USD

What country are you in?
US

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Word Processing, webwork, programming. The following would be nice but by no means necessities: CAD and Circuit design, Steam(DOTA2)

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
nope

What screen size do you require?
at least 10 inches. I am on the go a lot and so portability is nice, I currently have a 15.6" which is outdated but the screen size is good

What screen resolution do you require?
higher is better, 1080p would be great, 1366x768 or 720p minimum

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
re certified is okay, though I would be willing to spend more if it was new (hence why I said around 600)

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
current laptop will die after 4 so more than 4 is great. 8+ would be really great

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
I honestly only ever play dota2, though this is by no means a requirement. If I could run it at native res on med I would be the happiest guy in the world. If it won't run it that's no problem

What operating system do you need? (if any)
not too concerned here, I am comfortable with running linux and I believe my tuition covers the cost of windows 8 so I could go that route

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
portability is great

How much hard drive space do you need?
school work only so I think 250GB minimum

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
webcam is nice, not a necessity

Is there anything else we need to know?
Here's where it gets interesting. I have an older VAIO http://www.cnet.com/laptops/sony-vaio-vgn-cs215j/4507-3121_7-33496199.html
I can probably use. I'm fairly sure it's in decent shape, it just needs a new HDD which I can buy between 70 and 100 dollars. I guess my question is would I be better off buying a new one or just replacing the HDD? My thoughts are if I can get a substantial amount of more power and better battery life in a more portable package i will go that route. If getting a substantial upgrade is going to run me more than 500 or 600 dollars I'll just upgrade the HDD. Thanks a ton guys, I will be doing some research on laptops while I eagerly await your responses smile.gif
