Budget Graphics Card

Thread Starter
Hey guys. So I have a bunch of parts laying around and I am building a computer for my girl friends nephew since he has never had his own before. He is going to use it (hopefully) for school and some light games. I basically have all the parts to put a new one together but a graphics card. We are looking for something rather inexpensive but able to last a bit of time. Budget is about $150 and brand doesn't matter. I haven't bought a card in a while so any insight would be nice. Games that he would play would be like minecraft, starcraft, and some other things that we load on it from steam. Nothing big.

Thanks guys!

If I were you I'd get a GTX 560ti. It fits your budget and it was one of the best at its time. Heres a link to one I just found on ebay really quick

650ti and 560ti are pretty close in performance. The 560ti will be better for compute, but considering its going to just be used for gaming, the 650ti may be better as Kepler architecture will be less hotter than the Fermi 560ti.

The cooler on the ASUS 650ti has two fans which will probably be ran at a lower RPM than your 560ti with a reference blower cooler (single centrifugal fan) -- the blowers tend to be louder than aftermarket coolers like the ASUS cooler, and only really benefits if you are running multiple cards in SLI as the blower fan will exhaust the heat in the rear of the case.

Like i said, since your girlfriend's nephew is probably using it for light gaming, the dual fans on the ASUS cooler should be quieter than the 560ti's reference blower cooler (unless you can get it with an aftermarket cooler like a Twin Frozr Cooler for example.

Thanks for the replies guys. I didn't even think about a 650. That is def in my price range.

The 7850 is a little too expensive right now. The other parts that I am going to use are a 1090T, some 2000Mhz Mushkin ram, a nice gigabyte MB, and a cool looking case with lots of lights. (Figure he would like some flashy) All things I have laying around.

Luckily I have an old copy of win7. Might put an alternative to Microsoft office unless I find a good deal. The main thing is going to be school but I know he loves to play games also so I am going to give him the option for that.

Oh and teamviewer for at home tech support! thumb.gif
