Why are all the 280/x, 290/x, 7950, 7970's out of stock?

Every single website I got to they are all out of stock, even on foreign sites. There are only a few available and the prices are ridiculous (taking advantage of the limited availability).

Just my luck. I want to upgrade to a modern AMD card, and when I save up the money I can't even buy one. It's been 3 weeks now and still no retailers have any stock and keep pushing their stock dates further back every week.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is?

Bitcoin/Litecoin miners use AMD cards because they mine the fastest, and thus buy like 10 cards at a time. But ive heard with current pricing and difficulty on the coins it takes around a year to payback 1 290x.

not from where I'm from. prices stayed the same and no problems with stocks just bought mine yesterday thumb.gif

Ya, just wait. Some ASIC or something else will kill litecoin mining soon enough, and then all those mining cards are gonna get dumped for next to nothing thumb.gif

I'm seriously considering selling my 7950 now, then using that money to buy a 290 when the bubble bursts.

Would take 6months max to pay off one 290x
Thats with a powercost of $0.06kwh
Thing is when people mine different coins and make basically double-triple what they would have mining mindlessly on a trade that 6months can get cut down to 3-4months quick frown.gif As we know if they have 1 290 they probably have 10 biggrin.gif

Sell the 7950 and get a nice card now smile.gif You will most definitely get more than what you paid for on a 7950 and get a pretty nice upgrade out of it.
Even with a release of an asic would take ~1yr for anything to even happen, most people don't like putting down a deposit or paying for the product and receiving it 6months later like the original butterfly labs asic card released biggrin.gif
Will be a long road till you see these AMD card prices go down, maybe nvidia maxwell project will put some competition on "miners market" and force prices to change

Ah I should have guessed all the miners were snatching these up, but I didn't realise AMD couldn't cope with the demand frown.gif. Just a simple supply and demand failure then.

I want one primarily for gaming, but I also mine coins every night when I go to bed and whenever i'm not using the computer. As for mining probability, there are literally hundreds of coins out there, not just litecoin smile.gif In fact, I just set up a forum for Xivra (if anyone has heard of it?) on xivra.com/forums. That's just one of the many coins that I feel will do well in the future, but anyway, thanks for answering my question. I thought AMD was shutting down or something, lol, but couldn't find such information in any news articles. I guess i'll just have to pre-order an overpriced card and get it next month hopefully.

edit: also, look into ASICS for scrypts, they are a gimmick as far as I can tell. You can buy graphics cards for a similar (if I remember correctly, slightly cheaper) price vs the asic for the same performance. They are not like sha miners. If you check the bitcointalk forums you can read what the 'pros' are saying about them. Doesn't seem like anything special.

I've waited 10weeks for a 280x toxic then gave up and ordered 290 for which I waited another 6 weeks

the 290x has three times the power of titan for mining

This makes me lol:

No wonder we have supply issues tongue.gif

The only website that doesn't price gouge too much is ShopBLT.com, and every one of their AMD cards are back ordered. You can, however, order at their asking price. The best price that I've found yet was a 290x for $559 (in stock), but I can't remember where I found it.

Ended up ordering this 280X version - https://www.saverstore.com/product/20505365/Asus-R9280X-DC2T-3GD5-Radeon-R9-280X-Graphic-Card---1070-MHz-Core---3-GB-GDDR5-SDRAM---PC

Looks nice and is one of the quietest smile.gif.
