Is Noctua ignoring system fan control programs?

While Noctua produces 4 pin fans that work with modern motherboards and software, They still package all of their CPU cooler products with 3 pin fans. Of course some products have a 3 to 4 pin adopter. But the 4th pin in the adopter is dead and only hides the pin on our motherboards. Most software will adjust the voltages on three pin fans. But will not let you fully optimist your cooler. I hope Noctua strives to keep their customer base with up to date packages, Rather than force people to look at other manufacturers that are keeping up with motherboard technology.

the number of pins on the fan depends on which model you buy. different noctua fans have 3 pin or 4 pin. the 4 pin versions will say PWM on the info. check noctua's website for all the models they offer.

^^^ pretty much
3 pin fans control speed via voltage regulation
4 pin fans control speed via Pulse Width Modulation meaning it runs at full voltage except it turns the fan on and off really fast to control the speed it spins at

if you plug a 3 pin fan into a 4 pin header... it's going to run at full speed because the 4 pin header is NOT using voltage regulation to control the speed of the fan smile.gif

so... yah... this is one of those RTFM moments smile.gif

I mentioned that Noctua makes 4 pin fans. But they do not package them with their coolers. So you purchase the coolers throw the fans into a box. And purchase Noctua 4 pin fans. I love Noctua products. But I do not love to spend more money to upgrade a product because Noctua wont include them in a package.

I imagine that Noctua does not change to PWM because of a contract with the manufacturer. Note that recent coolers like the L12 use PWM fans.  Remember that their non-click PWM circuit is relatively recent. I suspect that when the contract comes up for a renewal we will see a change.

You can get the NH-D14 SE2011. It has PWM fans. I know because I got one.

They offer the PWM compatibility in the NH-DS14 SE2011 package. But this cooler is mounting system is LGA 2011 compatibly only. Once you purchase your CPU and mainboard. You copy the invoices send them to Noctua. And then wait for an NM-I115x mounting kit to be sent to you from Austria. Would it not be much more convenient for customers to purchase an NH-D13-4P package? They have broken into the PWM market already for the Sandy Bridge. But are not being progressive with the hottest market in decades. The Z87. I have my new case and have purchased Noctua 4 pin case fans for it because the quality is fantastic. But it is frustrating to let my new babe sit idle for want of a PWM D14. Other markets are calling.

Something to keep in mind is there are very few motherboards that have PWM on more than CPU fan headers. Even though most have other 4-pin fan headers they are not PWM but are 3-pin variable voltage control.

The U12S and U14S come with PWM fans.

As they replace older models in the product line, I suspect all of Noctua's CPU coolers will become PWM over time.
