Take 6.10. There is really no reason to stay with 6.06 now.

Depends on what you want. FreeBSD is much more configurable and a little faster because of it, but it has a bit of a learning cure that is different from linux. Harder? Not neccesarily, but you'd better be comfortable with a command line when you first get started.

Ubuntu is not as configurable as BSD, but it has perhaps the best hardwar support I've ever seen on an out-of-the-box linux distro, as well as a grweat community and great guides for almost everything. If you want to turn it one, be greeted by a nice GUI installer, and not have to do much with drivers, Ubuntu.

You will need space for at least 2 more partitions. You can shrink your Windows partitions of you need room.
