Are You Concerned Your G80 May Not Live Up To Its Glory?

Thread Starter
K, I've been reading lots of magazines (while pooping) and internet articles and they all say the same, the 8800 cards are amazingly fast, yada, yada, yada, yada......

But then they mentioned something that speculates as if the G80 may not live up to its real glory when DX10 comes out, because ALL of the benchmarks have been done on DX9 and there are absolutely no DX10 benchmarks where the 8800s can show its true potential, if any?

I want an 8800 GTX which it goes against my whole principle of never spending more than $400 or a video card but hell! I got the money and the thing that keeps holing me back from hitting the "pay now" key are those articles.

So I'm having several 2nd thoughts on that because I sure don't want to spend $530 for something that may not live up to my dreams and have to re-upgrade again.

I don't know what to do, I got the money and willing to, but.....I got the hebbie-jeebies.

What ya fellas think? Had any thoughts or 2nd thoughts as well? Now that you have one or will have one soon?

i think you should wait for ATI's response just so you can see how it compares before you go all in on anything... in other words make an informed decision once you have the needed facts.

If you don't want to spend over $400 for a video card, then get the GTS on Newegg, it's $399.99 after rebate

Great Information about the 9th word...

Hmm... I would wait until DX10 came out, just to be sure...

I think you should buy the best last-generation GPU for cheap. I did that and it plays all the games I have at best detail without any performance issues.

If your a benchmark guru or a person who demands the best, then go for a G80.

Funny because I could have spent ~$650.00 CAD for a 8800gts where I live and I bought a 7900gtx for about half the price. I could never pay double the cost for 10 more fps (give or take).

Considering how well the G80 performs in DX9 (an API for which it was not specifically built) I cannot believe it will perform any less brilliantly when DX10 hits, considering it will be able to then utilize the UA. As far as Im concerned, the biggest G80 bottleneck out there, hard drives considered, is DX9. Once Vista hits and unleashes all of my G80's unified shaders Im sure ill be in gaming Nirvana.

PS. Im not concerned at all.
I don't plan on getting Vista for at least a year. Only reason to do so is for DX10. And I did not purchase my 8800 for the DX10. This doesn't have much to do with the subject of this thread...

Wait, Nasgul. You're so close to new cards being released and prices coming down, that pulling the trigger now would be foolish. In one or two months, I fully expect you to buy a DX10 capable GPU, and tell us all how great it is in Vista.

No, not really.

I bought mine to get a performance increase now, instead of going multi-gpu.

My 8800gtx lived up to everything I read about it. I play every game at 1920x1440 with everything maxed and my framerates are very good, and have a tendency to not get bogged down at all, so gameplay is buttery smooth

Most games are completely smooth with 16x quality AA. The absence of framerate quivers is quite nice.
