[WCCF] Tegra K1 Almost 4 Times Faster than Tegra 4 - Page 5

Actually, the major stumbling block for Nvida Tegra 4 is the lack of integrated broadband. This is why they bought Icera to compete because they didn't have enough IP or R&D for wireless communication. Nvidia first SoC with integrated broadband was the slower Tegra 4i.

K1 will be able to compete again.

Lol yeah lets see where it ends up. These are nothing but estimates given by Nvidia, it's early days.

K1 looks exciting but let's keep it in perspective. Also, it won't be competing against Jaguar, it will be Mullins, and all the other yet to be announced mobile socs from the big players. K1 looks amazing because Nvidia are one of the few that have actually showed their hand.

In the end they are competing with giants like Mediatek, Qualcomm, Samsung and Intel. Even if it's everything we hope it could be, design wins will be few and far between for both K1 and Mullins. The mobile soc space is too saturated and margins are bottom of the barrel low.

edit: Nobody seems to be talking about Cherry Trail. I expect that to completely destroy K1 and Mullins in terms of raw CPU horsepower.

If the PCmark8 teasers are any indication the 4.5W Mullins has a CPU part on par with a 2GHz Jaguar

Just like Ouya is the only device that runs tegra 3 at full spec.

People keep forgetting that ARM runs like garbage compared to x86 while running chrome. Put that into perspective when you consider the performance numbers. Watch how, although baytrail might be slower than some competition, it's render times are significantly faster then competitors that show better benchmark scores.

I'd rather run baytrail/an E2-1800, which would render pages significantly faster than any ARM device.

Yep and everybody wants x86 compatibility. Notice how completely dead Windows RT is compared to WP.

Cherry Trail is coming. x86, Android compatibility, and more horsepower than anything competitors are going to offer. It won't end well for ARM guiltysmiley.gif

It's why I think smaller players using ARM designs like Nvidia stand no chance.

Price is a very large factor, too. Cherry Trail is not cheap, and neither is Tegra. AMD's SOCs are also not situable for low and mid range devices.

Intel, AMD, nvidia, meh.I don't see any of them making a breakthrough with this generation on this segment. Intel has the cash to burn and strings to pull in order to strengthen their presence but they will need more than Lenovo, Asus, Acer or so. And I feel both Samsung and Apple are still hostile towards the prospect of a strong intel on mobile- the very last thing they need is to pave the way for intel to outmuscle ARM, create a new monopoly and then sell them overpriced silicon.
