black screen immediately under load after installing accelero on 290 (solved now)

Thread Starter
EDIT: fixed it ;o]

finished installing accelero on my 290 and I am getting black screens right after I start any game or valley

heatsinks installed:

modified a zalman 5800 vrm heatsink that I got with VF3000A cooler and didn't use on my 6950/6970

used phobya ultra pads....0.5mm on the part that touches the vrm strip, 1mm on the rest of the heatsink

for the 3 vrms I modified one of the accelero supplied heatsinks

used electrical tape to prevent shorting with the parts around it

also used electrical tape to isolate the parts next to the vrm strip (only 4 done on the picture)...also used the tape on the parts right of the strip (not yet done on this pic, but you can see it on the second picture there is a tape under the heatsink area)

I killed my last card when attempting to install aftermarket cooler so I tried my best to prevent shortages...any metal parts close to any heatsink were covered by electrical tape....not sure I can do better

temps look ok....core is 43-44 in idle and vrms are 28 and 30 in idle so all significantly lower than with stock cooler

I used sekusei thermal tape to fit the ram sinks and small vrm heatsink...the vrm strip is hold by original spring screws and has a thermal pad on the whole bottom area...for the last ram that interferes with the accelero bracket I modified one of the accelero supplied heatsinks and made a low profile heatsink

I am still within the return period (have one more week) but I am hoping to get it sorted so I can keep the card (don't want it if I cannot make the accelero work with it)

You getting just black screens, or does it crash and reboot?

I had a similar problem with my first card. Fine at idle, but as soon as you put a load on it it would black screen and the computer would power cycle. Turned out to be a bad card, died completely after just a few of those power cycles. The black screen problem is more common (where it just goes black screen but doesn't crash). Also seems to be a hardware issue if it is happening at stock, some people and the problem and the RMA card was fine. Can also be caused by overclocks though, so try reverting to stock if you aren't already.

Did it work before you changed the cooler?

was getting black screen/freeze (had to turn off pc, even hard reset didn't work) about 0-3s after starting any game/valley and it was ok before I changed the cooler....but it seems I've fixed it already.....the low profile heatsink was not "low profile" enough.....it was the same height as the core guard frame but the accelero base actually bends a lot even when not tightened that much (the second time I went quite light on the screw tightness and it still bended a lot).....I could see the low profile ramsink lifted on one side slightly when I took the card out.....I already had the fan guard off since I couldn't do the screwdriver method to get the power lead out as they suggest in manual...had to take the card out, remove the fans, disconnect the power....was quite tricky so I immediately dremelled like 2cm of the fan shroud...shoudn't make much difference

now that I've taken the low profile sink off it seems to run ok....even the idle temps dropped from 44 to 34 and the valley is running as I am typing this ;o]]

was worried it was one of the vrm heatsinks....making the ramsink more low profile will be easy enough...so glad the elpida chip survived that

btw after about 15-20 mins of valley it sits at 70core, 65 vrm1, 55 vrm2 with 12v on the fan so both the core and the vrms run cooler (the vrms were 80 and 60ish at 60-66% blower speed)....it's quiet even on max (but audible, it's silent at about 7v, almost silent at 9v) but since that's on stock clock/voltage the core seems higher then I expected....might try tightening it a bit more....still relieved it works now

Oh man that VRM sink looks awesome - i wonder if you could get that seperately. My VRM1 temps are killing me - but i wont be able to break 1200mhz core unless i go underwater or use thermal glue on these junk sinks.

thx man, it was a bit more fiddly than I expected though

as I said in the other thread not sure they can be purchased separate as both the vrm sinks were accesories of aftermarket coolers I had

but as you can see it can be done even with heatsink for different card....I know you can get vrm sink for 6900 cards from zalman (ZM-RHS69) but the 5800 one I got with vf3000a is a better shape for 290, still required lot of modding (few hours of filing/dremeling)

both the 5800 and 6900 sinks have holes 85mm apart, the 290 needs 87mm so I had to extend them a bit....also since the strip is quite close to the boxes on left I had to file about 0.5-1mm on the left side and also since those small vrm boxes on right are very close I had to make the vrm strip contact area a little thinner by filing the edge a bit

pretty pleased with the vrm temps....since I was waiting 6 weeks for the 290 I've spent lot of time in google sketchup measuring various dimensions of the 290 pcb and pretty much worked out all the heatsinks before I actually got my card, just from the pcb picture (already had the accelero by that time)....than it took the whole weekend to put the plans to reality

for the 3 vrms I guess someone having accelero on 290 could sell you one, you get 3 of them with accelero (those biggest ones on the top left corner) and probably not many users went as far as I did and just used the small ones as suggested by arctic....used the same heatsink to do my low profile ram sink....

quite pleased with the sekusei tape....seems to transfer heat well, it's super thin and is a lot more sticky then the 3m tape that was on the enzotech ramsinks...it's pretty cheap as well....bought nine 6x1" strips (actually got some extra and got 12) for just a few bucks on ebay

I see you did a bang up job on your 290. I'm going down this road. Can you tell me which copper heat sinks you got/where to get em? ANything else i might need?

I see the modified thing on the right was fab'd up from an old card, i'll figure that out, but wouldn't knowing what where you got everything else!

Thanks!
+jason

thx for your comment....it was quite a job to do but happy with the result (at least I didn't kill it as in my last attempt at installing aftermarket gpu cooler - I killed my 6950/6970 during the vf3000a installation)...the amd is not making it easy with that packed pcd layout....those 16 rams instead of 8 makes the card quite tight

those ramsinks are Enzotech BCC9 RAM Cooler...you can get them from frozencpu, amazon, newegg etc...just google it and pick your favourite shop (I got them locally from a watercooling parts shop)....you need 2 sets....there are 8 ramsinks in one package and you need 15 of them (the 16th ram needs low profile heatsink for accelero)...they are made from a solid chunk of quality copper so you can't get any better at the same size....they might be a little overkill though since I don't think OCing the vrams has much effect on games fps and therefore not planning to OC them much but since the amd cheaped out and didn't include a temp sensor for the rams I'd rather be safe then sorry....on most my previous gpus (4870, 6950) it was always the vrams getting too hot and causing instability issues for me once they get to about 84-85 celsium the driver resets and the accelero ones didn't look that great to me so I got the enzotech ones

also I highly recommend this thermal tape for them....the 3M one supplied on the ramsinks is crap and doesn't stick almost at all
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151110335023?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
(search for SEKISUI 5760 Thermal Adhesive Tape Double Sided 8"x1" - 3 Strips if the link expires)

I got 3 of those items, so 9 strips, and I actually got 3 extra strips for free....it's quite cheap and even with one set of 3 strips you can do at least 2 installations....regrettably the strip is not quite wide enough to be cut in two rows for the ramsinks....well actually the ramsinks are 14x14mm but the ram chips are only 12x14mm so in theory it would work but you would have to cover the ram chips with the tape and than stick the ramsinks on them....since I had enough I went the easier route and cut it at 14x14 to cover the whole ramsink since the ram chips are quite close and you have to think a bit when doing the installation so they don't touch each other.....just start with the ones that have some limitations like having some metal parts sticking out of the pcb near them....for example the one on the top and the one the bottom from the row of 5 rams have some metal part very close to them so start with these and place them so they overlap the chips to the other direction.....it is worth trying it out before you peel it off to see how close they will have to be

the sekisui is at least ten times more adhesive than the pre-applied 3M tape (after some heating the sekisui tape will stick even more then when freshly applied and change it's color a bit) and since it is also about ten times thinner I bet it transfers the heat a lot better....I actually got 2 cards hoping one would unlock (it didn't) so I actually sorted the installation on the one with slightly lower asic which I was returning within the 14day return period and when I was taking the accelero off the ramsinks were holding pretty well....I had to twist them back and forth quite a few times so the adhesive would weaken enough to be taken off....I can assure you they will not fall off by itself even if you accidentally touch them and put some pressure on them

regrettably I have to admit that the vrm1 (the strip) cooler is still not enough for some serious OC that the accelero would otherwise allow you since the core is only about 60 degrees in load.....when I tried the 1150 core at +125mV and 50% power limit which I tested on the stock blower at 60% to be the max stable without exceeding 1.35v much the vrm1 got to 90 celsium with the accelero after just a few minutes (and probably would get even higher, I was watching the temps and turned it off when it got to 90 degrees)...with the stock blower at 60% the vrm1 was topping at about 80 degrees at same voltage/freq/power limit after long gaming

I actually took the accelero off since I had to return one of the cards but when I had it on I was running it at 1000core, stock voltage and +20 power limit which is enough for most games maxxed (like assasins creed black flag) and will stay 60+ fps on 1920x1200....with that setting the vrm1 gets to 66 and the vrm2 is about 55 with the accelero fan on 12v which is still pretty quiet....for crysis3 and probably BF4 (haven't tried it yet) you might want a little more but once the BF4 gets mantle running I am sure even mild oc like 1000mhz will be enough for single monitor

the exact same - stock voltage/ +20% power/ 1000mhz core freq with the stock blower at 60% the vrm1 was about 55 and the vrm2 about 65....with the stock blower the vrm1 is right under the fan so it gets cooler

I will be installing the accelero on the second card this weekend so I will do some more testing then...I am thinking of trying a direct contact on the vrm strip instead using the thermal pad....if the contact will be good enough I might just use a thermal paste on the vrm1 cooler which might bring the temps little down and let me OC the core more....since I killed my 6950/6970 while doing my last aftermarket heatsink installation I was taking the safe route and put extra care to preventing any shortings with the pcb parts...

I ordered the 290 and accelero before the non-reference cards were out and I payed little extra on one of the cards so I can return it for 2 months instead of just 2 weeks as is usual in my country....I wanted to get myself some more time for trying to sort the cooling and if I can't sort it out I knew by that 2 months the non-reference cards will be out so I can still return it, get money back and buy some non-reference card (tri-x probably)

the vrm1 temps are not as good as I hoped for so I will have to improve it by something to be happy enough to keep it....didn't expect it to be that hard to cool....since my card only does 1150 on 1.35v I would be happy if I could get to 1100 with the accelero, than the OC difference would not be that big and I would rather choose the quieter cooler

hope it helps you decide if this is the way you want to go.....the tri-x is the same money as the bf4 blower card + accelero (not including the enzotech ramsinks)....so it really depends if you want mild oc and quiet cooler or if you want the max oc and don't mind the card being loud (still not as loud as the blower though but not quiet either from the reviews I've seen)

Cool! thanks for the write up!

i did preorder the kraken g10, http://store.nzxt.com/NZXT-KRAKEN-G10-GPU-BRACKET-p/rl-krg10.htm?1=1&CartID=2
I hope i can fab up something that will fit the vrm and let the g10 do it's job so i won't be throttled by the vrm once the chip is nice and liquid cooled.

I'm in the same exact situation, my G10 should be here the first week of febuary, and I've seen a review on the G10 which shows that the actually water cooling is fantastic, but when they had teh card under absolute full load the VRM was ~102*C. I want to get/make a sink that'll fit under that 92mm fan because that'll be the only way to keep them cool.

Ace looking VRM heatsink, top job.

btw I've installed the accelero on the second r290 last weekend and while doing that I tested the vrm1 heatsink direct contact and when I also took off the rubber washers (they were causing poor contact on ends) it was pretty much perfect so I just used some old thermalright chillstream instead of thermal pad to improve the vrm1 cooling

it seems to help a bit but maybe the slightly lower stock temps (62 vs 66 in valley) were caused by using the tri-x bios which actually runs about 0.5v lower than the original one I had on my card

I was running the tri-x bios on my reference 290 blower for about a week before I installed the accelero and noticed a massive temperature drop at the same fan speeds.....before on the stock bios it was topping I think at 1.258v or even more in gpuz at 947/1250 and got to 95 degrees at 46-48%......now with the tri-x bios it runs at 1000/1300 with only 1,203v in gpuz and max fans speed I've seen was 49% but usually is 46% (I was running the tri-x auto fan mode) and the max core temp I've seen was 80 or 81, usually stays at 79 so quite an improvement over the stock bios temps (at the same fan speed)

anyway since my card only does 1150 at 1.35v to be artefact free in games I've set 1100mhz on core as the goal that I would like to get to with accelero to be happy and keep it. I can still return this second card for few weeks but after some testing today I am happy with the results and think I'll keep the accelero cooled reference 290 instead returning it and getting tri-x one (they were not available when I bought it)

at 1100/1300, +50mv, +20 power limit, max gpuz vddc 1,289v the temps were core 61, vrm1 72, vrm2 55 at 12v on the accelero fan

tested it's stable in games so for a 24/7 setup I quite like that...haven't really played with it more, just set this up the first time and liked the results so far, so I might be able to further improve it but at least for now I can say I've achieved the goal I've set to be happy enough to keep it...the vrm1 only got to 72 twice for a few seconds on the fourth valley run and dropped back to 71 where it is 99% of the time so it seems that's where it will stay even on long sessions....the vrm2 might crawl a little more over time but at 55 it's far from running hot

for playing normal games that don't have crazy hw req (like ac black flag) I can even keep the accelero running at silent 6-7v and still keep the temps very nice....one day I forgot to up the fans when I came home and played black flag for quite a while on the tri-x stock 1000/1300 and the vrm1 only got to 71 or 72 while running the "desktop" 6-7v mode on accelero

btw the scores might be lower now since my 2500k runs only at 3.4ghz instead of normal 4.5ghz since my gigabyte z68x-ud4 died and using some cheap 80 dollar gigabyte board that can't oc at all, only let's me increase the multiplier from stock 33 to 34 and can't set more even after trying all the bioses, hopefully my new board arrives in one or max two weeks - special ordered a 300 dollar asrock z77 extreme9 since it's the only 1155 mobo that has four slots for primary graphic card so I can fit the accelero 290 in the primary slot and my passive asus gt640 for hybrid physx in the secondary slot...also it has 10 sata ports which I could use over the 8 which sadly became standard these days on most other manufacturer boards....my old p35-ds4 used to have 10 as well but the z68x-ud4 which was the same level motherboard only has 8 and most other manufacturers offer only 8 as well these days when I looked at all socket 1155 and 2011 boards
