Cheap upgrade question

Hi guys

I currently have a Q6600 on a GA-G41M-Combo motherboard with a GTX-260 and 4 Gigs of DDR2. This computer is struggling to play ARMA 3 above 10 FPS on a 1920X1080 screen.

I also have a athlon 2 on a M5A78L-M with 8 Gigs of DDR3 Ram sitting around.

I'm hoping to be able to piece a computer together that will play ARMA3 now, and hopefully Star Citizen (Crysis 3) on a low setting so I can play the dogfight module.

My friend is sending me his GTX-570 SOC to play with. I am on a very small budget of sub $200. Would it be worth getting a FX-6300 CPU for the AMD build, and use that for my gaming computer? Or put the money towards a Haswell build in 9 months time?

Prices for AMD CPUs in Australia
FX-6300 $140
FX-8320 $192
FX-8350 $240

You're picking some seriously cpu intensive games. That motherboard has become somewhat rare and sought after and should fetch a good price, so I hesitate to say this, but one possibility is the xenon 771 mod. Get 8 gig of 1066 in that thing along with an x5460 along with a bit of FSB OC, and you should get pretty darn near that fx6300

I wouldn't put much more than a 4xxx series in that motherboard, it's pretty low end (I have two of them laying around).

What model of athlon do you have to pair it with?

I would not spend a penny until you see how well your friends GTX570 performs in your systems. On the Intel platform can you set the FSB to 1333 and get an OC out of the Q6600?

Cheers
