No reason not to either really. It is done through the magician software and seems to be pretty much failsafe. I have not seen people having issues doing it.

I have two 840 Pros, one I kept on the earlier firmware, one I updated, for a test. Couldn't tell the difference in performance. But don't think we know everything going on inside a SSD, we don't even scratch the surface. That's why when updates are issued, they are worth your attention.

I just updated my other 840 Pro today, by coincidence, honestly. An OS drive too, completed the update in about 20 seconds, PC shutdown. Start it again and all works fine. Using it right now.

But I can see the not broken, don't fix it philosophy too. Just remember the update exists if things get worse.

An SSD is one of those things I always update if a new firmware comes out. They're going to be discovering issues as these things age and make adjustments that may not make a difference now but will when your SSD gets older.

EDIT: And always have a good backup first, just to be safe.

^ Easy to explain. If the option in your BIOS for "Combined AHCI/IDE mode" is enabled, some of your SATA ports are in IDE mode and some are in AHCI mode.
