Out of the tech loop, need help building new machine

So first off I'm a gamer, that's mostly what I use my PC for. For the past few years I've been making due with my laptop (i7, 540m, 8gigs of ram) but constantly being plugged in for long gaming sessions and sub-par cooling, it's finally kicking the bucket, it powers down minutes after loading a game.

So it's finally time to replace it, which brings me here. First time I ever built a computer was several years ago when 8800s first came out, and I was looking to make a really top of the line machine, you know overclocking to 120fps and all that. Now, that isn't really what I'm looking for. I still might overlock a little bit, but I'm well past the part of my life where I need to go over 60fps ever.

I don't need help picking out every component (although if you feel like suggesting them feel free) but at the very least I'm looking for some guidance on which CPU/GPU to go with, something good enough to run recent games at max settings (or over max settings via a control panel) and still a smooth fps, (anything between 24-60). Just to give a frame of referrence, before my laptop started dying, the most recent games I was playing at max settings with a smooth fps were remember me, and DmC, they slowed down a little if I started streaming though, so I'm looking for something better than what I've got, but it doesn't have to be thousands of dollars.

TLDR: Need help building a budget gaming rig

Just browsing right now, the GPU I'm looking at is this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130830 how well would something like that run current games?

Or is this one significantly better due to more cores?

need a budget and screen size. Do you want small form factor? Silent?

The 650 is actually kinda marginal for modern games at 30 fps.

I have a 22" monitor at 1680x1050. Budget, well as low as possible, but I wouldn't mind spending around $600, give or take a hundred. At work, my machine has a 560, and it works great, so I figured a 650 would be better wouldn't it?

And it being small/silent aren't much of a concern, I don't want it to sound like a jet engine, as that can be annoying, but it doesn't have to be completely silent. tongue.gif

not really. With nvidia the second number often trumps the first. Are you married to nvidia? Also, can you overclock?

lol I prefer nvidia/intel over amd/ati, but only because thats what ive always used, im not opposed to switching. And yes I'm aware of how to overclock.

the processor will not clock and it almost certainly has an h series motherboard. The 4440 is actually slower than some i3s. It apparently also has a built in removable battery UPS system, which means the wiring is probably a horrible proprietary mess. If you want a pre built, it's not the worst, but it's not exactly quick either and will never be able to go faster than it does. It also very possibly has a proprietary PSU because of the weird UPS thing. When it goes the machine goes unless you can get another one.

I'm 90% sure I can beat it with parts if you can get to a micro center. If you can't, how about this:
