Tips on OCing plz. :)

Thread Starter
Hi,
I want to OC my pc and I don't know about matching clockspeeds, FSB, RAM, voltage, clock speed, etc. to make sure it is stable and effective. Below is a link to an everest ultimate report that should show all of my components accurately and more.

http://www.shireenzstitchez.com/ebay/report.txt

I don't want to throw any money into my pc right now, so I'll just stick with what I have and OC as much as I can. I'm wondering, will OCing reduce the life of my components much if I am at safe stable temps?

I should let you know, my CPU was overheating a bit w/ the stock cooler when i played counter strike:source (no OC) so I got a scythe bat cooler. It is a big 120mm fan w/ a nice 1 tube copper/aluminum heatsink. It was inexpensive, but is a very nice cooler for the money imo. It dropped my temps a LOT. I think the everest report has my current temps from the sensor, not at load. I think at load my cpu never goes about about 43, maybe 41 for the NB. I have a zalman passive cooler on teh NB because the original w/ a little fan buzzed withink like a week of building the PC. I have the corsair ddr400 (maybe 333, check report) cas 2.5 cms pro ram (w/ a heatspreader w/ the little led lights). I have a powercolor x800xl with stock cooling, except I did add arctic silver 5 to my cpu, NB, and vid card...i think it lowered the temp on ALL of them about 3-4 degrees C.

My MSI neo3 mobo uses the normal nforce4 chipset and it has a lot of overclockablility options in the bios. Do I need another program to OC as well? My monitoring/benchmarking software is everest ultimate, although I dled the little cmd prompt OC test 1.1 thing from this site. Is that the best thing to use to monitor if my OC is working well? I assume to OC my card (which I heard u can't OC much, but I don't know why because it is operating at WAAAY below max temps) i will need ati tools. I have it dled but not installed.

I will need some pretty specific instructions as to what to modify in the bios, since I don't know wat most of the OC features mean. If anyone knows much about the bios on my board (see report) that would help a lot. Also, let me know what are good max safe temps for my components (gpu, cpu, mem, etc). I want a good speed, but I'm mostly concerned w/ stability. I don't want to risk anything like damage due to overheating. So i think maybe my cpu shouldnt go over 50 or 55? I know that the MAX MAX temp for my cpu is 70C (skt 754) while the MAX MAX for teh skt 939s is 65C. And the MAX MAX temp for my gpu is something ridiculous like 120C, but I know I shouldn't operate anywhere near these speeds. I also don't know if I can monitor RAM temp.

Also, a final note, I use the aerocool 550 watt black/silver line PSU. It seems real nice and was about 75 bux at newegg when I built my PC BUT my voltages in everest for the 5V 3.3V 12V etc are I think very inaccurate. I thought my 12V was WAY too low and almost replaced the psu, but I tested another PSU and same thing. I found out my PSU actually has no sensors for voltage, so everest just makes up incorrect values (I'm pretty sure, correct me if I'm wrong).

Alright, thx for the help in advance guys and I'd love to get this rolling asap.

Also, if my temps seem high for not at load on the report, I just found out my back case fan (my cpu fan points backward RIGHT into this fan) was dead. I replaced it and the temps are lower, so I'm ready to OC now.

pullin air from ur stock cpu fan wont really help its just pushing the hot air out so it wont stay in your casue but on OC post some specs of what ur system is running cpu, video card, power supply, etc let us know were all curious

alright, 1 sec...btw, with that fan, waht i was saying, is i was overheating a bit because NO FANS were taking air OUT of the case.... it was just lots of hot air trapped inside...and that definitely DOES make a big difference.

OK, let's start addressing your questions. First of all, I would suggest you read the numerous stickies in the different sections to find more out about overclocking before you try anything. You made a good move on upgrading your cooling, however 43C load on stock is still kind of high. On stock I get load temps of ~28C.

Well temps are an indirect result of what could potentially harm your components. Voltage is what you really need to pay attention to. Your CPU's vcore should never get to 1.7v, as that will likely fry it if you try running it there. 1.6v is not something you want to run 24/7 so try and stay under that. If you are doing a suicide run and benchmarking, then it may be ok, but never leave it there for extended periods of time.

No, do not use any programs to OC your PC. That is the advice most people will give you and I strongly advise you to follow it. Everest is a great program for monitoring temps and voltages. I use it and I love it. You should also download CPU-Z, as we will be asking for screenshots of it as you try your OCing.

To check to see if your OC is stable, you need to either download Orthos (SP2004) or Prime95. Either will work since you are on a single core (otherwise I would suggest Orthos BETA as it is easier to run on dual core systems than dual Prime95ing). It most situations when testing for stability you will want to run Large FFTs as your torture test. If you can't figure either program out, there are tons of threads you can search for that will tell you how to use them.

For your video card, yes, use ATI Tools.

For RAM stability, download memtest86 and throw that on a disk. It is a bootable CD program that stresses RAM.

That PSU should be fine for OCing with. As far as voltages go, go into your BIOS and find Hardware Monitoring to see what the reading on your voltages on the 5V, 3.3V, and 12V are. If they are more than 10% off, then you may want to replace that PSU.

Temps, I wouldn't recommend going above 55C on load at all. If you can stay below that, that would be ideal.

Overclocking is generally done by increasing your FSB until your system is unstable, then increasing your vcore so you can continue to raise your FSB. You should only raise your FSB in 5 or 10 Mhz increments each time you test. There are uncountable threads that tell you how to overclock exactly out there. So use the search function and get reading!

I've provided you with a lot of information here, so good luck, and when you have more specific questions, come back and we'll see what we can do to help.
