Super tight budget gaming rig - Page 2

Minecraft runs fine on a upper end APU as long as the graphics are left "stock". When using high rez texture packs it becomes memory bandwidth bottle-necked and runs pretty bad on an APU. (I've tested it personally, FPS drops into the teens with a 256x pack).

MC with texture packs runs better on a discrete GPU with a high bandwidth VRAM bus. Even an OLD used GPU with a wide VRAM bus would be better than an APU for this game.

How is this?

Nothing from AMD currently will touch this in gaming.

Dont know if your still looking but my build is as follows

AMD A6-5400K@ 4Ghz (4.2Ghz turbo) 1.4v

4Gb (2x2gb) DDR3 1600mhz G.Skill eco

ASrock FM2A55M-VG3+ motherboard

Corsair CX500 500watt PSU

Im using a old case and 250GB HDD i had laying around and i have the stock CPU cooler as well it runs the games i play with out an issue. The only downfall is since the graphics are integrated the use shared memory so my PC only can use 3.5gb of the 4 i have installed

A 500gb HDD, a quad-core APU that can overclock well, higher speed 1866mha RAM (for the APU's GPU memory bandwidth) and enough PSU for overclocking. This will handle much more game-wise, for much longer. It's worth the extra investment if you can (and only €24 more for 8gb of even faster 2133mhz RAM: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f317000cl11d8gbxl) and is pretty balanced IMO.

Here's a review of this same basic setup: lightly overclocked A8-5600k (sans the extra memory speed shown in the next link)

only issue with your build (well what you reccomended) is A series APUs only can handle 1866mhz with out overclocking any thing and 1600mhz runs just fine

I would consider going the used route.

I built a computer for my little brother so he could play minecraft and do homework on.

I found an Athlon x3 450 for $20
I had an old abit an-m2 am2+ motherboard that I bios flashed to be able to use the am3 cpu
Found an 8800gts for $20
Got a rosewill matx case for $22 on amazon
And my dad bought a hard drive

In total everything cost less than the hard drive. And I asked my brother yesterday if he was glad I built him a computer and he said yes.

So the moral is, don't just limit yourself to new, if you can check the used market on Craigslist, you can get creative and cheap, and just buy her a game or two with the money saved!
