2 Identical Rigs. One Fails, The Other Passes... Find The Difference!

GIGABYTE EX58-UD3R

INTEL i7 920 (d0)

KINGSTON HyperX DDR3 1600 3 x 2GB kit

ATI RADEON HD 5870

WINDOWS 7 64bit

Both are 5 year old rigs and have been well-used and never overclocked, until now.

Now, I'm trying to overclock my rig while the other person leaves it at stock.

The problem is that my rig is not even stable at the same, stock BIOS settings as the other rig.

We have swapped the memory sticks and tried testing ; same results. He is stable, I'm not. This eliminates any memory related concerns in my humble opinion...

We do the testing with Prime95 & LinX.

Mine fails Prime95 as instantaneously as I press "Start". His passes with flying colors.

It's always the same core that is failing in Prime95 and never any other...

What might be the difference that's causing this?

Note: This question is in conjuncture with this thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1458683/i7-920-help-a-chump-overclock-his-cpu-chapter-ii

By stock Bios settings... do you mean overclock wise(volts/etc)? or the version(xxver02, etc)?

I would update the Bios to any latest version personally and also try re-seating the chip/cpu cooler and apply a fresh coat of thermal paste(esp if it hasn't been done for 5yrs). If it is still crashing after that I would swap chips with the other PC and run both on p95 to rule out if you need a new CPU or MB.

The thing is, one of the rigs has latest BIOS Flash, brand new H60i AIO Cooler with brand new thermal paste.

This is the one failing Prime95...

The other one - with the 5 years old thermal paste, old BIOS and stock cooler - is the one passing all the tests...

By Stock Bios, I mean the factory settings on the CPU, no overclock whatsoever.

It's probably a damaged chip ? I mean, 5 years is a while and honestly all it could need it just a small bump in voltage.

Bump the voltage up a bit. Do you do any gaming? It would have crashed by now during gaming if it were "unstable".

I've been trying real hard to get it to pass Prime95. These last 3 days, all I've been doing is trying to get this thing stable... I've tried VCore boosts, no changes.

When I used to play games, before the AIO Cooler, sometimes I used to get high temperatures and sometimes system freezing.

If you got enough time, I would try to change the CPU first with your friend, if nothing changes, try his MOBO, otherwise it might be a PSU issue too.

Maybe I should just snag his golden rig and replace it with my crappy sack of potatoes. He couldn't notice right?

I meant for testing purpose, try his components and see whats wrong with yours

I have encountered a case where a *newer* BIOS was unstable (BSODs galore), and I had to flash back to an older one.

Flash your BIOS back to the same version that the other rig has.
