The other one - with the 5 years old thermal paste, old BIOS and stock cooler - is the one passing all the tests...

By Stock Bios, I mean the factory settings on the CPU, no overclock whatsoever.
You should probably try to downgrade the bios to the same version then, if it's still an issue test your parts(chip/mb by temporaily switching with the other build), you might also want to check the psu

Flash your BIOS back to the same version that the other rig has.

Edit: The other stable rig runs BIOS ver, ''FB''

Oh, 6-8 months ago I believe, there was this power surge that took out my PSU. Thanks to having my rig connected to the grid via a UPS, my other parts seemed to work fine. (or so I thought until today)

I  used to have a Toughpower 750W - same as the other one's rig.

Replaced the busted one with a Corsair 750W afterwards.

I never received a BSOD. The screen would just turn into "a rack" which consisted of thin vertical/identical stripes usually beige-green-yellow-orange-brownish colored ones... I believe though, this is more of a GPU problem no? I could hear the latest sound effects loop and sometimes if I was fast enough, I could save the system by ctrl+alt+del'ing...

It could possibly be a sign of a dying GPU, which could cause the freezing while gaming but to me speaking from past events I don't see that making a core fail prime.

CPU-MOBO-GPU ...

I suspect the MB, If you have the parts and the time I'd just do some quick swap and see if it solves it.

Very true, @OP the only real option you have to rule out exactly what the issue is would be using the other rigs parts as a test dummy

Exactly, I think the first post I made he thought I suggested to steal his friend rigs lol In no way I would recommend to do such things, all I said was to test with your friends part, shouldn't take more than 1.5 hours.

Haha no worrıes, I fully understood what you meant.

The thing is, I don't have any spare thermal paste to apply if I were to remove and re-fit those CPUs.

Although I think I can do it by reading guides, I have never messed with CPU montage before, so that's another reason why I'm reluctant.

There' a third problem too ; the other person uses his rig like 24/7, swapping RAM is one thing, CPUs on the other hand... - nothing you guys can do about this last problem, alas. biggrinsmiley.gif

I think then, I'll have to wait for the time he goes to sleep to be able to get permission to mutila.. *ahem* take his CPU.

Will post ASAP when it's done. Meanwhile, any more suggestions are welcome!
