Scrap using a soundcard and get proper speakers.
~140$ is not much and stuffing a soundcard to that budget is a no go.

Not to mention that the ALC1150 onboard should be more than decent for that budget.

As for the speakers, Swans M10 are recommended even here in OCN. And that is where I put my vote too.
Another option would be something like LP-2020A+ and cheap passive speakers. The amp can be found from ebay/etc. but the passive speakers can be hard to find depending on where you live. And I don't know where you live rolleyes.gif

a) is it better to buy a $100 soundcard and use the X-mini, or some random 1.0 logitech $20 speaker (logitech goods are very fairly priced here)
b) or is it better to buy a proper entry-level speaker and scrap using sound card?
What?! Are you getting the soundcard for your headphones?
Because you won't hear much difference between onboard/100$ soundcard even with the Swans.

If you decide to go with lepai amp and some passive speakers. I would say go for the mb42x over the mb42. The MB42X has a proper crossover that is supposed to make the speakers sound a lot better.

Here is a sort of comparison by ZeosPantera. This won't be 1:1 on how the speakers will sound in "real life" as it is speakers>mic>youtube compression>your headphones, but it does a pretty good comparison on how much better the Miccas with a proper crossover sound.
