[Neowin] Micro-windmills may power your next smartphone

The proposed design uses a mixture of origami principles and regular micro-engineering to create a 3D self-assembling power generation device that works similarly to a windmill. Lab tests, using artificial wind, have proven that the device is surprisingly sturdy and another great benefit is that due to the way they are built, such devices can be cheaply and easily mass-produced.

"Imagine that they can be cheaply made on the surfaces of portable electronics,” Chiao said, “so you can place them on a sleeve for your smart phone. When the phone is out of battery power, all you need to do is to put on the sleeve, wave the phone in the air for a few minutes and you can use the phone again."

So are we going to have these running on the outside of the smartphone. That doesnt sound too aesthetically pleasing.

A minute? It takes a few minutes to get any real charge on my phone when plugged into 120v...I don't see this little device pushing much voltage. I doubt it would give more than a couple percent battery power in a minute.

I want a case that absorbs surrounding microwave radiation, kinetic energy from walking, thermoelectric conversion for heat differences, and this new windmill thing. Then the phone will rarely run out of power.

We have tech that absorbs power over wave frequency.
The issue, is that the devices we want it to run still greatly exceed the power rating of these devices.

The irony is that the devices that can be used with this kind of charger can last 2+ days on a single charge, so there isn't any point. tongue.gif

Seems gimmicky.

If we're going to use human power to charge our devices, it's about time somebody develop a harness for our nervous system's action potential.

Otherwise we might as well be;
