[GameSpot] Sony explains why PlayStation Vita has come up short - Page 2

Gameboy has always been easy to pick up and play a few rounds of a simplistic game (along with some bigger ones)

PSP, on the other hand, has its focus on games that require a little more of your attention than your average words w/ friends game.

I pretty much use my handheld consoles for "core gaming". I'll lay in bed with a handheld system and play long RPG's for hours on end. I'm 23 years old.

What "current-gen" handheld system do I own? 3DS. I play Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei IV (which is rated M, just to point that out), Pokemon (you may see it as a kid's game, but it's a pretty in-depth RPG, and plenty of my friends in their 20's still play it, which is the main reason that I also play it), in addition to Monster Hunter, and many others. I could probably go on for a while listing all of the great RPG's on 3DS.

The only Vita game I'm interested in is Persona 4 Golden, and I won't buy a Vita for one game. Persona 4 came out early in the Vita's life, I told myself I'd snag one when there were more games I was interested in, and that still hasn't happened. I said the same thing about the 3DS when it was released, I didn't actually snag one until February 2013 when Fire Emblem was released, and it seems like it's been nothing but a train of awesome games ever since.

This is the reason and the Vita's launch price.

The overall game selection and 3rd party support for the 3DS is much greater than the Vita.

Nintendo has dominated the hand held market since the original Gameboy; Atari, Sega, and some others failed to offer solid competition.

The real answer is Nintendo still rules the handheld market. 3DS>Vita

To all the people who quoted me.. I agree with you. The lack of (appropriate) content is what killed it.

If i wanted a handheld gaming console, i would not use a tablet... the controls are lack luster. While I always have my phone, i still dont consider it a gaming console for the same reason. I loved my PSP when i rooted it and i put all of the NES, SEGA, SNES, GB\GBC emulators and games on it. It had the right form-factor and everything to play them. Playing Secret of Mana on my phone is near impossible because of the controls.

They never had a big title to put on the system, no Mario, Zelda, Pokemon. Nothing that sparked peoples interests. I agree, they had more "adult" games, but nothing big ever came out with it.... they may have in japan.

One thing that was I enjoyed about my PSP was that i could play PS1 games on it, so i went back and replayed FF7+8. I wonder if the vita would be able to play PS2 games, and if they ever took the clasics and ported them over.

Psp was amazing for all the square enix rpgs, same reason i loved gameboy advance handheld rpgs. I thought the vita would have more to offer but for 40-50 a game worth horrible selction its the console purchase i regret the most.... bought mine day one and hardly ever picked it up since, even with playstation plus i dont touch it. I was worried i wouldn't play my ps4 at all turns out to be all i play now so its not that im not into gaming any more its that the vita doesn't spark my intrests... it honestly should have been a psp 2, same screen size and format just with fast specs and a 2nd along stick. in my opion my vita is an ugly piece of junk, but i'll keep it around and wait for those rpgs to just start pouring in

The reason it failed, and the DS didn't, is the DS targets a much much broader audience.

I have three children, almost 4, 6, and almost 9. My two oldest (boys) both have a 3DS, and my youngest (girl) wants one for her birthday. I can walk into a store with them and there are great games available for it that is appropriate for all their ages and skills, all the way up to my skill level and age. The DS is that "One console to rule them all" in the handheld market, where the Vita is targeting the older audience almost exclusively.

In short, you can casual game or hardcore game on the DS, you really can't do that on the Vita. Or, rather, the Vita branding makes people believe you can't casual game on it, including myself.
