Is it okay?

Hi

In my last thread, I was advised to use TAT to monitor temperatures. It gives me an error: Error enumerating on demand clock modulation support.

Well, that's not the strange part.

Short version of what follows: Should I leave my computer case open if it cools the CPU down a lot ?

Longer version:

Before touching my comp, it was a E6700@2.66GHz set at 2.672GHz with a 1066 FSB and 333MHz RAM (I still can't figure out why my Kingston HyperX PC-6400 doesn't show up in CPUZ and shows up as a PC-5300). I did some minor OC'ing, got to 2.8GHz and my temperature skyrocketed (I monitored using PCProbe II that came with the mobo as well as Core Temp). The temperature before was about 40°C at idle. After this minor change, it went to 50°C idle and my water cooler's radiator (it's not a great watercooling system) then started making a ton of noise and it still does (as soon as temperatures of the CPU reach high enough and it continues with the noise even after the temperatures have decreased).

I ran 2 simultaneous Prime95 tests on each core and after 3 hours, I thought they were stable enough. I was still dissatisfied with the temperatures but I still wanted to see how high I could go. I opened the side panel of the case and overclocked further in the BIOS.

I am now at 3.0GHz, 1200FSB, and my RAM's at 400MHz (CPUZ still detects it as PC5300). And the strange thing is, the temperature is lower. It's constantly at 39°C idle but with the case open.

Should I leave the case open?

Theres nothing wrong with a case being open, some run theirs without cases so its really a matter you decide

it doesnt matter really unless you have something that can somehow fall or fly into the case

Cool! Nope lol nothing's flying around here. I was just wondering.

I'll just turn the open half towards the wall but so that air can still flow through.

Thanks for the reply!

*running without a case ATM*

I get the same TAT error. Try CoreTemp.

Hey,

I am using CoreTemp but reading around different forums, they say that TAT is much more accurate and usually gives higher readings. Is it a mobo compatibility issue?

TAT and CoreTemp read from the same sensor and will give the same readings.
