What is that talk about updating bios on video cards?

Could someone help me understanding this practice with overclocking?

Well, some cards have their voltages locked (or very, very restricted). So often custom-VBIOS's are created in order to get around this, and allow the GPUs to be overvolted and thus overclocked further.

A prime example of this is the GTX 780.

I wouldn't recommend it however, unless you REALLY want to push your GPU.

Because of how the thermal throttling works on GK104/GK110/Hawaii, it might just be better to get an aftermarket cooler / watercooling first.

It's very easy and you can GAIN a lot and have fun testing stuff too.

I was able to really push mine hard with some very SIMPLE and creative (not so simple) mods one of which is this > http://www.overclock.net/t/1437634/installation-guide-tips-of-rev-2-icy-vision-on-r9-290x or this http://www.overclock.net/t/1203636/official-amd-ati-gpu-mod-club-aka-the-red-mod (which I did)

IF you install the correct bios (read the info in the 1st link) you can achieve some impressive results. Be patient and take baby steps. IF you are insane (I am) you will look for the last point to be had in benchmarks. See my sig line. wink.gif

I'm still #2 on the Fire Strike 290 list and ONLY because of the difference in the CPU .... my GPU killed the #1 slot. biggrin.gif
