Universal Graphics card watercooling (needing a little help)

Thread Starter
Ok, so previously I have bought these EK fullcover waterblock for my setups (4870x2 & 5970). But this must have an end. I find it too expensive to go out and buy a fullcover waterblock each time. Therefore, I researching to find out how I make a universal watercoling setup for my graphics cards, so that I can use the setup on my next card.

So far, I have found pieces for the GPU and the memory chips (MCX).

Cooling pieces
GPU: Alphacool HF 14 Smart Motion universal
MCX: Alphacool MCX one

Other
Tubing: Tygon R3607 tubing 5/3mm clear
Adapters: Alphacool MCX 5x divider

My 5cents - The thoughts behind the decisions
About the GPU cooler, I started out with wanting the XSPC RayStorm GPU. But the fact that is wouldn't be possible to have that GPU block, at the same time as I was using the the Alphacool MCX ones, it just wasn't possible. I had to find a GPU block where the intake and outtake were placed in the top of the block.
My first concern with this solution, was that it could give me some problems if I wanted to run Crossfire or SLI at some point. But I think that I will just have to hope that the problem can be fixed with some 90 degrees adapters.

NEXT STEP
What I need now, is some proper cooling for VRM & mosfets, preferably watercooling.

I know that many people are using passive heatsinks/heatpipes like the Enzotech BMR-C1 High Profile, or some custom build solution for the specific card. The specific build solution is not appealing for me, then I would rather buy a fullcover waterblock.

I think that I somewhere on the interwebz saw a dude who had a waterblock on his VRMs. Of course, I forgot to bookmark the link, and now I can't find it.

I have looked at the Koolance MVR-40 (MB VReg), and thought that it might be an idea?

Does anyone know anything about watercooling of the VRMs?

If you have any kind of input please post them here. I will update this main post in hope that others will be able to draw good use of it too.

Indeed, but I just figured I would throw that out there since you seemed to like EK. Are the VRMs and RAM getting so hot on your video card that they are causing your overclock to fail? I assume you've already tried the usual method of using heatsinks and airflow?

I haven't tried that out yet no. I'm still using the stock-cooling as I want to be sure that I can cool the card efficient without buying a fullcover.

What I have done on the other hand, is see what other people are getting of temperatures with heatsinks and airflow. An d I don't find the temperatures appealing. And they don't really give the headroom for OC as watercooling would smile.gif

I understand your predicament. This is why, as you know now, that its important to pick hardware that fits your long term goals as well as your short term needs. When I was shopping for my 780 I made sure to get one with s reference board since I knew WC was in my future.

That's fine and all. Any my XFX R9 290 is also a reference card. But this have nothing to do with the original topic wink.gif Reference card or not. I'm looking for WC that can be used on both reference and non reference cards. nvidea as radeon cards. Old as new.

The GPU and MCX blocks fulfills these demands. But I haven't found the other pieces that I need to be able to WC the entire board. For that, I need something that can WC the VRMs. Not just heatsinks and airflow. It will work, but not as good. Not as good = less overclock headroom.

The point I was trying to make is that if full board water cooling is s requirement, you need to check before buying the card. I don't think there are going to be any solutions to "make your own" full board cooler. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but even then I can't imagine three or more water blocks costing less than a full board cooler snyways , and that was your goal right?

It is more expensive the fist time, when you buy it. That's the case with ALL WC. But in the long run there should be an economic benefit.
Furthermore, I know there are others out there who are playing around with setting up their own watercooling on graphics cards. I want to find out, just how much is possible to do on your own.
Just as well as some watercool their motherboard, some puts on heatpipes, and others does nothing.
