Overclocking my 4200X2

Thread Starter
I am on a mission. I wan't to push every ounce of performance I can from my machine, without risking components (er?).

My goal is to at LEAST hit a 2.6GHz completely stable, which shouldnt be hard. If possible I wan't to push it closer to 3GHz

Current Setup:

AMD Athlon64 x2 4200+ (2.2GHz, 2x512 L2) Manchester Core Skt 939
ASUS A8N32 SLI-Deluxe Motherboard
Corsair XMS PRO CMX512-3200XLPRO (2-2-2-5 @ PC3200, 2T Cmd Rate)
ULTRA 550Watt X2-Connect SLI PSU
Zalman CNPS9500 Heatsink
Idle CPU Temp (right now) 38C. Load rarely gets above 46. Room to play here?

I know my components are...well...built for overclocking. So this should be easy...right?

I have no experience overclocking AMD chips. My last CPU was a Pentium 531 3.0GHz chip, with an ASRock motherboard that only let me change FSB. I pushed it to 225 mhz once because I was bored, which got me to 3.37-ish GHz...then bluescreened on BF2.

I know my way very well around a computer, just new-ish to the overclocking world and would like a little advice to get started. Plus I have work in 5 hours and don't feel like sleeping, so this will be an all-nighter OC party. WOOT.

Thanks,
- Mr_Me_II

first you change the ht multiplier to 4x and set dividers for ram after that just start upping the fsb until it becomes unstable and back down a bit
i would also get some aftermarket cooling cause with stock the temps are gonna skyrocket

With his memory he shouldnt have to Add Dividers. Over-volt that corsair a bit and pump it up, loosen your timings, set your vcore to 1.55. You may not even have to bring your HT link down any, I didnt..

vCore from 1.39 to 1.55 seems a little steep...no? Please note I am not using the AM2 chip, I am running the 939 Manchester (if that makes a difference.)

The memory shouldn't give me any problems I've read reviews of this stuff running up to 267 stable with 3-3-3-8 (or something)

And first poster, re read my post. AMD Chips dont come with Zalman coolers...

most of the chips run well OC'd at 1.55 you can slowly step it up but you will wind up there anyway. If you do some searches you will find most people on here with a 3800 or better wind up running it at 1.55 ....try 1.46 first im sitting at 2.8 right now and im @ 1.46 vcore but im also on stock cooling ATM so im stuck here cuz of heat right now. Do you have AS5 under that Zalman? 38 is awful high for a Zalman cooler, I idle at 39C OC'd on stock

I ran out of AS5...using what Zalman came with...maybe too thin a layer though. I thought it seemed a little high...

I'll go play around with voltages after House...damn TV. Will post results, thanks for input thus far!

No such thing as too thin a layer of TIM, unless it's non existent. You want to have just enough to fill the tiny imperfections between the two surfaces, no more, no less. Any more is just making it more difficult for the heat to get to the HSF.

But yeah, you are WAY too hot. I'm Idling at 27C on both cores right now and I'm at 2.9Ghz on 1.552v vcore.

Guess I'm just used to my old Intel 3GHz...idling at 47 and hittin 58 easy with any kind of load.

So...put vCore to 1.425 to start...tried upping memory voltage a touch, and set the bus to 210...

Booted fine (and quick) but as soon as I opened My Computer to go run a 32m session of SuperPI, the whole system locked. Activity LED's on the ram froze in place. I rebooted, changed a couple things, same deal. Reboot, no post.

Power off - use that magic jumper to make everything well again...only I moved the wrong one (worked it by touch...stupid me)

Chasis Intrusion!
Fatal Error! System halted...

Gr.

So now im back to square one. Nothings overclocked...but at least I can open My Computer

I'm actually at 2.6 on mine. I have only done 11 hours of Orthos and had no errors, I plan to do a full 24 sometime next week. So far I haven't had any problems. Get your temps down and I bet you will get to 2.6. I too plan to try to hit 3ghz, but mine being a Manchester makes me skeptical.
