[EnGadget] Next-gen strategy game engine lets you control an army of 5,000 units at one time - Page 3

new RTS games are always good as long as they are not from blizzard. i'm sick of all these shooters

More isn't always better, I find RTS games to be exhausting as they stand now. I want more strategy games like FTL which IMO is the best strategy game since Brigandine on PSone. I know not everyone feels this way but I'm not a fan of organized chaos.

You guys that hate shooters should try ARMA out. It is great in the fact that it is truely a massive mapped game, it's AI is functioning even when you aren't in the area, ala MSO mods, and did I mention the maps are ti-giga-mega-tanic, and would make the biggest maps of the BF series blush with embarassment. Nothing like it in the world, and the best part is you don't need a 1 jigawatt supercomputer to get high frame rates. It is playable at 17 FPS.

As for why BF4 is showcasing Mantle is quite easy... It allows for better physics and more particles. Say you are playing a fast paced FPS vice a RTS game, and you are running and gunning. A grenade blast can only have so many particles that the system can assign it, and still accomplish everything else it, the API has to do. So with Mantle, it makes it, as Honey Boo-Boo's mom would put it: BEAUTIMUS.... a glorious spectacle of hellfire and brimstone! I am all for the way Mantle is adapable to the genre of game!

I'm sorry but why is this an achievement or 'next-gen'? Total war has been doing this and more for a while now. I've heard of people having armies up to 10000 soldiers with mods.

Yes but once the unit count get really high, you will get lag due to a CPU bottleneck.

And isn't Mantle a graphics API? Won't there be a CPU bottleneck either way?

Every real-time strategy game has some kind of population cap.

False. Command and conquer games never had any pop cap limits whatsoever.

Mantle reduces CPU load for a lot of stuff, i'd imagine you can still bring down a modern CPU by doing something like calculating movement and collision with a high frequency on thousands of units against eachother (sc2 chokes with a hundred)
