I don't ever remember having anything even close to that many units at once. You sure as hell could not fit that many on the screen at one time and its not like red alert didn't start to bog down when you had lots of units (when running on hardware of the time).

During the 80's and mid 90's, PC gaming was mostly about adventures,TBS,RTS,dungeon crawling RPGs and flight sims. Then some things happened-home computers (Amiga 500/Atari ST etc. platforms full of action games) died out, internet became mainstream, 3D shooters and MMO's appeared. PC gamer demographics have rapidly changed because of those factors. Technologies like mantle might change the scene once again, imagine 32player competitive RTS games.biggrin.gif

It uses a cpu dependent engine to not only render graphics to but handle physics. Mantle balances that load between the hardware.

Which will be interesting to see results! Mantle, G-sync and lightboost hack kinda came out of nowhere but i'm glad to see all three ^.^

Though they will have to make a DX or OpenGL version too so I'd expect that 5000 units to get cut down...unless they are really going to make a GCN capable GPU a requirement for playing the game and we all know how often most people actually read the requirements. Because while Mantle is not technically restricted to GCN GPUs...that is the only version that exists and Nvidia has made no motion to get on board. I doubt AMD would let them do so in an affordable manner even if they were willing. These two companies haven't been known for there cooperativeness or...maturity.

Though I wouldn't be surprised to see OpenGL 5.0 to be pretty close to the performance that Mantle might bring anyway...I don't know about future D3D/Direct X versions though. I haven't seen any documentation on that...though I also haven't seen any documentation on Mantle besides some promotional slides and the results of a couple home cooked demos.

How long must we wait? December turned into January, and now January is turning into February..

Don't know whether to blame AMD or DICE for this..

Still cannot believe that people haven't been spreading this video more.

If I am correct, then this video is from the AMD stand at CES, and is a BF4 Mantle demo. On an MSI laptop, w/ R9 M290X which IIRC is a down clocked 7870? anyhow... oh yeah throw eyefinity in there too! with 40 FPS! boom!

http://www.nordichardware.se/CES2014/vi-spelar-mantle-versionen-av-bf4-i-eyefinity-pa-en-laptop.html

Ps. Love the dude who checks there's not a rig hidden running the demo!

Would be nice to know the exact specs of that laptop.

Nevertheless, very impressive and I appreciate you sharing that link with us.
