Help me pick a card AMD or Nvidia - Page 2

I've had 770's and 7970's (rebadged 280's). I've developed a preference for nvidia for the reasons you stated, run cooler in general, tend to have great performance.

If you are planning on ever going dual cards, I would take paired 770's over paired 280 (7970)'s every time. I had both 770's in SLI and 7970's in Crossfire and had a much better overall experience with Nvidia.

As to the pricing, I think where he's located, they're not price gouging like they are in some other regions (like the US, heck many shops are still out of stock on them). It really did drive up the price of AMD products substantially, but if his region isn't very much effected by the gouging then maybe he can still get them at or around normal price. (OR NOT, JUST SAW OP RESPONSE)

Yeah looking at price history's we're not affected by the gouging going on, BUT the cards aren't getting cheaper and they're rarely in stock, however I am happy to wait so it's not a "I need it now" kind of thing. I just want to get my build finalised so I know exactly what it is I'm needing to buy.

I'll likely go with the Gigabyte 280x as it's dirt cheap £226 has Battlefield 4 and will do the job I need, however if the 770 had 3gb of Vram then I probably would have gone with that

The 280x would be a great choice. The price is right, includes a game you want, has 3gb on a 384bit bus... Also, if you decide to crossfire down the road, CF's scaling is pretty damn good. Also, those cards should overclock quite well since they are essentially 7970's and those overclocked great on average.

Well, it's really not AMD's fault that they're expensive... Retailers are charging more for them due to demand, because they can... AMD didn't change pricing or anything. There are still some more honest retailers out there, but unfortunately they go out of stock almost immediately because of the fact they aren't gouging like all the big shops and probably cannot carry as big of a quantity as those big shops also. AMD is probably both striving due to the mining craze and damning it at the same time because it's making their market (price/performance for the gamer) go right out the window. So they may be moving tons of cards, but it's not necessarily to their intended demographic (and some of those people who only wanted it for gaming are going to their competitor as a result).

I know that @_@ i'm just sad because initially I just wanted some cheap 280x matrix cards... as they were not too expensive for running my setup.. now.. I have to pay way more than i initially intended for my setup =/ I also plan to mine a bit to see if the cards will pay for themselves or not

Yeah, it sucks and is definitely throwing a fork in people's plans, but at least it's not as bad as it was when it first hit. Even used ones were getting massive cash on ebay at that time... (figures, that happened 2 weeks AFTER I sold a 7970 lightning for cheap)

Hopefully it will return to normal soon.

I watch the bitcoin markets.. it wont be normal for a while... The 280x matrix is now going for 460 to 700..... Which is retarded... its no longer even practical to buy lol for both mining or use.

Heh, yes that is quite ridiculous, you should be able to get 2 of them for that. I was lucky to have purchased my 290 the day before the prices jumped through the roof. In fact, I got it shipped for less than MSRP due to a coupon code with my preferred retailer.

Anyway.............. Slight topic derail...

the R9 290 is the best out of all of those options, if you can grab with with an aftermarket cooler - all the better!

However, if you can't or don't want to deal with the heat/noise then the 770 might be a better choice, 290 and 770 aren't that far apart in terms of performance.
