Gtx770 Lightning - Voltage & Clock anomalies

Hey everyone !
Just bought a brand new gtx 770 lightning, and, while fooling in MSI's Afterburner i noticed something wierd.

Tried Overclocking it and what i got, on stock voltages, is 1293 (Boost) Core clock and 7,6 Ghz Effective memory clock.

The software i used was MSI Afterburner 3.0.0 Beta 18 ( The gpu "Toggle" on the card itself was on the Normal BIOS and not the LN2 one).

After i got that, was curious what this bad boy could do with say an extra +50mv to the core voltage.

Unlocking the voltage was simple enough ( I guess ? ). Went in Afterburner's Settings and under the General Tab i ticked Unlock Votlage Control and selected extended MSI from the Dropdown menu to the right of the tick box.

Now here is where things get tricky. With the Dropdown menu set to Standard MSI and no voltage increase ( not even +12mv ) , +40 on the core clock would yield the maximum Boost clock 1293. If i set it to Extended MSI and again no voltage increase, the same +40 on the core clock gives me 1280 Boost.

Seems to me, that by choosing the Extended MSI voltage "Profile", the core clock offsets don't increase as high for some reason. Could someone, please, verify this behaviour.

Another curious thing would be that : If i enable the Voltage monitoring under the monitor tab, Afterburner reports the correct voltage, BUT WITH A HIGH DROP UNDER LOAD. Say, i set the voltage to +70mv, all is well and dandy in the idle phase, but when i load up Heaven Bench or a game, the voltage drops to ~~1.23 - 1.24.

This drop effectively means....i have to set the voltage to +75 AT THE VERY LEAST if i want to keep the 1333 Mhz Core clock (at the 1.24 voltage with the load drop) .

I would like to game at 1333Mhz clock. I know that, in order to keep this OC stable, i need 1.24. Would running ~~1.27 ( +75mv in Afterburner ) at Idle damage the GPU in the long term ? My assumption is that because of the beefed up power delivery system & the millitary Class III components i should be fine.

The question of the million:did you rise the power limit?

Yes, i did. I have it set at 109%. The curious thing that intrigues me is the fact that there is a difference between the 2 Voltage Control settings : "Extended MSI" and "Standard MSI".

Standard MSI giving me 1293 Boost clock and Extended giving me 1280. All the settings are exactly the same, but, for some reason if i switch between those 2, i get that result....
Oh...and then there's the whole Voltage Drop thing under load frown.gif

What happen if you set the power limit at 120%?

Can't set it to 120%. 109% is the maximum Afterburner will allow in any of the 2 states. I did not unlock it any higher because the card never comes close to it. It ussualy hovers around 80-90 % of the power limit.

I guess i'll just consider the first thing as an Afterburner bug.

Regarding my Overclock. Would running +69 mv ruin my card in the long term ? I plan on keeping it for around 3 - 3.5 years. +69mv yields a 1.25-1.26 while Small loads and 1.23 - 1.24 during Very high loads ( 80-90% gpu usage ). The voltage kicks in while Boost is at its max ( 1333 mhz core clock ) otherwise, for smaller clocks the voltage is around 0.9 - 1.1 V.

I haven't had a 770 Lightning, although it should be very similar to the 680 Lightning. The 680 came out of the box at ~1.25V loaded on the multimeter, up to +100mV on the slider was around 1.35V, staying within the voltages that MSI allowed out of the box on a standard AB should be reasonably safe. Do you have a multimeter to see the actual voltage it is at?

The idle voltage being a bit higher is OK, it's kinda like a cpu with fixed or offset voltage, fixed voltage is higher but without load it doesn't pull much current, so the power going through it is not much difference.

Thanks for replying FtW 420 ^_^ !

Hooked up my multimeter to the GPU V-Check port on the card. It read 1.238V. Afterburner was also reporting 1.238 XD. Guess MSI were not kidding about the Digital PWM Controler. This thing is really precise.

Interesting thing : When the load is under 40 % the boost clock is 1333 MHZ and the voltage 1.256V. If the load rises above 50 %, the Voltage starts to drop until it reaches 1.238V.

Now, i know a few things about electromigration and i assume the voltage drops to counter-act the increase in the temperature.

Will the card last at least around 2-3 years at this voltage ?
