be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 - Page 24

Dark Rock PRO 3 might just be my favorite cooler if not for the clumsy mounting system. Does Be Quiet have plans to improve it?

That universal AMD/Intel backplate have issues with my motherboard backplate and the chokes soldering points, and if I ever need to change the thermal paste I'll have to remove the motherboard from my PC thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

I had to use a noctua backplate to mount my PRO 3 without compatibility issues

@vicyo: agreed 100%, DRP3 is super sexy and a great performer, but that mounting system is literally terrible redface.gif

I think anybody would have to try really hard to make a bad X99 mounting system anyways biggrin.gif

It all depends on what X99 mobo you have.

My X99 Deluxe has huge I/O shields and heatsinks everywhere so tightening the small nuts with that tiny wrench was really a hard job and I had to do it outside the case

I agree, be quiet! mounting is not much good on LGA2011 mounts. I would rather not do it. And luckily I have an assortment of 'real' wrenches .. not that piece of garbage supplied. Too much like trying to access and replace parts in modern cars. biggrin.gif I spend a week the other day R&R'ing the entire dash to replace a leaking heater core because idiot designers didn't put an access panel in firewall .. which as wide open and easily accessible directly in front of radiator .. where I had to remove the hoses to remove radiator back into passenger compartment! . mad.gif

The backplate actually fits behind the Sabertooth rear armor - I have done it on Z87 and Z97 boards. You need to insert one side, slide it over and then slide it to the center. I'm not saying that is the right thing to do (I like your Noctua fix far better, and will do that the next time I mount), but in BQ's defense, that situation is the same with any backplate that is Intel/AMD combo regardless of brand.

I guess really the point is that all manufacturers need to stop using this combo backplates. Use the stock AMD backplates like Noctua.

I think i got a similar "wrench" with those Finger rollerblades that was all the rage back in the 90's biggrin.gif I only used that garbage because I thought real sockets or wrenches would damage the nuts just like those automotive aluminium fittings....

They can fit with sabertooth or ROG armor but the gryphon backplate have the edges folded down around the CPU area, that's why I could not use the backplate even if I ignored the chokes soldering spots frown.gif

To be honest I don't even know why manufactures bother to make amd backplates if the stock one is just as good or better than the aftermarket ones.

Ah when I said it's easy to fit to an X99 I did mean outside of the case smile.gif

To fit it I take the RAM out so i can access the bolts via the RAM slots (involves removing the front fan).

It wouldnt be so easy if i used the 2 ram slots directly next to the socket though as they end up underneath the heatsink so would be awkward to get back in but that's any dual tower.

You guys are doing it wrong. Installation is really simple. You screw from the back. Also you tighten the nut while you have the cooler NOT in the mobo. You do that first then put on the mobo, screw from the back.
