Upcoming build - "I just want something that isn't slow."

I am a gamer. Mrs. Biology is also a gamer, albeit with less broad taste in games. This is about 85% awesome, 5% shouting match, and 10% making it up to each other. Between money and school, we've been subsisting on more or less stock laptops for the last 5 or so years. However, tax season looks like it's going to be a good one for the Biology family, and we're going to make the move back to custom built systems.

The downside is that I need to split my budget and make two builds.

The upside is that I *get* to make two builds.

Aaaaand, since I have an interest in Mrs. Biology staying Mrs. Biology, hers comes first. biggrin.gif

Now, being a number of years out of the loop, I'm still playing catch-up on the current state of technology. However, I think I've more or less got the idea.

Her Requirements:
-MMO gaming with consistent playable frame rates on high/max settings @ 1080p
-Basic general use (internet, email, streaming video/audio)
-Probably dual screen
-No long load times
-Last 4-5 years without a rebuild
-"I don't care what it looks like"

Here's what I've put together so far; any feedback/advice is welcome.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2BLUf
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110 94.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus Z87-PRO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card
Case: Corsair Air 540 ATX Desktop Case
PSU: Rosewill Capstone 750W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply

I do intend to overclock the CPU as much as temps with that cooler will allow, but I'm not looking for much. I plan to go high on the PSU to accommodate adding a second card for SLI, but between that and possibly overvolting the CPU I'm not particularly sure where I should be. Too much? Too little?

Wattage is fine unless you want to overvolt your video cards

But the Seasonic G 750 watts is 10$ more and is a little better

Thanks, I'll take a look at that one. In all likelihood I'll be running the video card(s) as is; my guess is that she's more likely to be bound by the CPU with the games she runs.

Personally i am not a fan of closed AIO kits

A good air cooler is cheaper is almost as good and you have no problems with leaks or pump noise and failure

Again thats personal opinion and experience

no heatsink cant perform as a h110 or kraken x60,swiftech h220,cooler master eisberg/glacer 240

At least with their stock fans(except th thermalright silver arrow sb-e extreme which fans are the best but still cant match an h110)

The only thing i would spend a bit more is GPU. 2GB will not last you 5 years.

Quite possibly, but I'm genuinely curious and want to play with an AIO a bit. They weren't an option last time I built a rig.

I could certainly go to a 4GB 760 or 770. Is 2GB really going to be limiting at 1080p though? The 780 seems like overkill given the application.

If you go with a descent AIO you should be happy. I'd get at least an H100i/H110, Swiftech H220, or something similar.

A 780 is far from overkill IMO if you want this build to last 4-5 years. I mean top of the line 5 years ago was the GTX280/4870 which are slowwww by today's standards.

4GB will not help. GTX780 will in the other hand.
