Best Cooler under £40 for i5 4670k

Thread Starter
So in my quest to get the best possible parts for the best price for the best possible performance I'm at a stage where I'm trying to choose a decent CPU cooler as I'm looking to OC the i5 to around 4.4/5ghz

Originally I was going to go with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO as it's cheap, does a good job for its price and has fairly decent reviews and I know it will be able to handle my OC requirements but no more.

However I've looked further into cooling reading some reviews and some various sites end of year awards and I came across the Phanteks PH-TC12DX which from tests has better cooling than the Evo and is only £10 more, plus the white fans will match the Stryker case I'm planning on getting, So after some more searching I've finally settled on the blue version of the Phantek which is £5 more but I'm in love with it and it will give me some extra cooling over the Evo for the OC'd chip

Some other coolers I've considered are Cooler Master Seidon 120V and Noctua NH-D14 Now I've seen some poor reviews for the Seidon and the tests show it in comparison with the Phantek, I know the Noctua is probably the best in terms of performance but it's £10 more and it's ugly as hell.

I was just looking for your opinions and suggestions if there's any I've missed out that are equally good ?

Also just found this Corsair CWCH100 Cooler Factory Refurbished which seems a steal at the price although I am dubious of the warranty and I'm concerned on installing it as it seems complicated

NH-D14 always a good bet.

HR-02 Macho BW also a good bet for under £40.

True Spirit 140 BW, if your case can take 170mm coolers. It's a smidge better cooling than the Macho.

I don't really like refurbs, nor water coolers. If you're not overclocking like crazy, a HR-02 Macho / Matterhorn Pure / CM 612 will do just fine. And for overclocking a 4670K, it's a bit of a lottery. You may get 4.4GHz, or you may not, even with a top cooler.

As for looks, well, I wouldn't care personally.

If you want the best performance, at a decent price, and if you can get a NH-D14 for around £50, There isn't really any competition.

If you want a good color combination, and you are spending on a Stryker, I'm sure you could find the extra dough for a PH-TC14PE in white.

PH-TC12DX is a good cooler as well, if you really don't want to stretch your budget. But it's not the best, nor the quietest under load.

If you really want the best of the best, then a dual 140mm water unit, but it's like double or triple your budget. Then double that for a good water loop.

Thanks guys

I'm trying to compare all of the coolers you've listed and I've listed but it's incredibly difficult as the tests have different results depending on who's done it

Just using this

It seems the Phantek and Noctua are the best within the price range I want to pay, I like the Noctua but it's so ugly and the Phantek is beautiful but more expensive for the PH-TC14PE.

Basically I want as cool as possible for as cheap as possible, if I can get a cooler that can do around 60degrees max load on a 4670 oc'd to 4.5ghz for £50 or less then I'm good, but obviously the cooler the better. At a push I may be willing to stretch for a H100i but at the moment looking at results it's not much better than the Noctua and Phantek, the Scythe's interest me too but I can't seem to find any test results for them.

Alpenfohn K2 £49.99 is one of the best and at a good price.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-020-AL

Raijintech EreBoss £26.99 is good cooler and cheap
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-000-RT&groupid=701&catid=2330&subcat=2666

If you have the case clearance
Thermalright True Spirit 140 £34.99 is quite good

Alpenföhn Brocken 2 isn't bad either. If you're in Europe it's actually available for you to buy
(see http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?287044-EKL-Alpenfoehn-Brocken-2 , http://www.hardwareluxx.de/index.php/artikel/hardware/kuehlung/26319-test-ekl-alpenfoehn-brocken-2.html?start=10 , http://www.technic3d.com/review/kuehler/1553-alpenfoehn-brocken-2/4.htm#oc , http://www.hartware.de/review_1635_5.html , http://www.hartware.de/review_1635_5.html , http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/gehaeuse-und-kuehlung/2013/alpenfoehn-brocken-2-cpu-towerkuehler-im-test/9/)

If you're in Europe the Be Quiet! coolers should also be available (dark Rock Pro 2 , Dark Rock 2 , Dark Rock Pro 3 , Dark Rock 3) although Scan.co.uk seems to sell them for higher than in mainland Europe

The Scythe Mugen 4 also hovers around that price range but only performs roughly equal to a Thermalright True Spirit 120M

The NZXT HAVIK 120 off scan.co.uk would be a good bet but the fans aren't the greatest and going off price I'd rather get a Thermalright cooler (esp. Macho or True 140)

Macho is around 37GBP http://www.scan.co.uk/products/thermalright-hr-02-macho-cpu-cooler-with-140mm-silent-fan-for-775-1155-1156-1366-amd-am2-am3

Macho 120 is only around 30GBP http://www.scan.co.uk/products/thermalright-macho-120-rev-a-heatsink-and-fan-cooler-intel-775-1150-1155-1156-1366-2011-amd-am2-am2p

The Cooler Master TPC 800 hovers around 40GBP but comes without fans.

--- edit: the Noctua NH-U9B is nowhere near any of the coolers from above

Any opinions on the Noctua NH-U9B, from what I can gather it's just as good as the D-14 but £10 cheaper ?

From what I've gathered the CM 212 EVO is hands down the best bang for buck cooler but for me it's not cool enough, some tests I've seen it run at 80 degrees which is within safety levels for the CPU but I want it cooler

The general consensus seems to be that for around my price mark Phantek and Noctua are the best based on cooling potential but you have to pay the premium for that

And then of course there's the plethora of other personal preference fans that people mention

I'm trying to find a list that just has every damn cooler and their temperatures so I can decide the best cooling for a price I'm willing to pay. Aesthetics aren't important but if I find 2 coolers around the same price and within a couple degrees I'll go for the prettier one. Noise levels I don't really care about, infact I like the white noise of fans I find it soothing so I just want a cooler that cools, if it's noisey then so be it

NH-U9B is a mid-range cooler.

212 is definitely not the best bang for the buck. There are many better for less here. Raijintek Ereboss & True Spirit 140 (posted above) for example,
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Raijintek/Ereboss/6.html

Alpenfohn K2 is probably the best for the money at the moment.

Here's a list by no means complete of the top coolers. All are within a couple degrees of each other.
Cooler size comparison (Width x Depth x Height looking from front of case with motherboard laying flat)
