HDMI Display issues with GTX780

Thread Starter
I upgraded to a GTX780 last weekend from dual HD6950s, and the performance gain is incredible ... but my image quality has gone to total poop. Text in "2D" such as using a web browser does not look crisp and clear like it used to, there are discolorations and artifacts around the edges. The best way I can describe it is if you go to your TV and turn the sharpness all the way up, that is very similar to what I am seeing.

The brightness is also completely out of whack, to the point that no amount of adjustments to brightness/contrast on the monitor and in-game gamma adjustments will produce truly black shades. The brightness issue persists through 2D and 3D modes.

I have done a bit of research on this, and it sounds VERY similar to the common EDID bug that plagued nVidia drivers before, however this issue seems to have dropped off the face of the earth in around 2010, presumably because the drivers were fixed. I tried to apply the old fixes, but the utilities to extract the current EDID do not work in Windows 8.

Here are the "facts of the case:"
  • The monitor is plugged directly into the video card with HDMI
  • There is a second monitor using DVI that does not seem affected
  • The issue started when I swapped out the video card, nothing else changed
  • I had never tweaked the settings on my monitor other than the color temperature - I restored it to factory defaults and made the same change but to no effect
  • I am running Windows 8.1 x64, and have tried the three most recent drivers from nVidia and they all exhibit this problem
  • Hooking this monitor up with DVI is not an option since it only has HDMI and VGA (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Acer??)
  • The nVidia CP shows the monitor connector as "HDMI - HDTV" even though this is in fact a monitor and not a TV - but maybe this is normal?

So I think that's the long and short of it. I'm open to any suggestions and comfortable performing advanced troubleshooting and tweaking, don't worry about dumbing anything down for me.

Acer S273HL. Sorry I should have included that, but wasn't sure it was totally relevant since it operated perfectly for two years attached to an AMD video card with the same HDMI cable.

Edit: I tried downloading and installed the drivers for it, but no dice. I'm not sure they really worked since there are no drivers for Windows 8 or 8.1 and I had to disable signed driver verification to even get them installed.

I think you're on the right track with EDID issues. I have a LG L246WP 24" LCD that works fine on AMD and NVidia, but will do what you describe when connected via HDMI to any Intel on-board IGP solution. Deeper research turned up some manual EDID tweaking in the registry to get a stable output.

I also have issues with some ACER 22" LCD TN panels on on-board video that shows a washed out image (low contrast) and reduced color depth, but looks fine on the same PC with AMD/NVidia.

Ultimately, I chalked it up to monitor compatibility issues and replaced it. Replacement monitor works fine on all 3 outputs (Intel, AMD, NVidia).

The only thing I can think of is:

1. EDID like you both mentioned earlier.
2. Type "cttune" and make sure clear type is checked.
3. Check your HDMI cord (my bro and I were testing two GTX780s and the out of range was the cause of a faulty DP cord), see if you can try another if you havent already?
4. Check your refresh rate, make sure they're on the native setting (1920x1080@60Hz).
5. Check other HDMI port on the monitor.

I used to have two Acer 23" monitors last year and whenever I had one on DVI and another on HDMI the HDMI one detected as HDTV but still worked fine, the only changes I had to do were scaling which I had to switch to 0% but also that was on an HD7950 so I'm not sure now if its on the nVidia side.

I will check the cable, but it worked fine with my AMD card. Refresh rate is 60Hz, and I doubt its clear type since I didn't have this issue before installing this card and nothing else changed.

No HDMI scaling on the nvidia card, the screen fit right from the beginning. I would much rather use DP or DVI. HDMI is not a great standard for PC monitors IMO.

FYI, I didn't try any of the "fix" suggested in the link above, since I am planning to upgrade my current monitor/GPU soon.

Interesting reads, but it didn't seem to help me.

I took these with my phone so the quality kinda sucks, but I think it should illustrate what I'm seeing.

Is the text messed up or just the color calibration you're talking about?
